My taxes were rejected, since somebody already filed for a return under my social security number,

Anybody been through this? How long will it take to get my identity restored?? Must be a crook that specializes in IRS scams, bank accounts, credit cards, etc. are fine. I didn't have to wait for Biden to screw up my taxes next year, the nightmare has already begun.

PS. We are looking at an ugly week in the market next week. (JMHO)

How irritating! So sorry.

"If you're a victim of tax return identity theft, your life becomes a mess. The whole thing typically takes about 10 to 14 months to straighten out."

But it turns out there’s an easy solution: prevention. You can get an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) from the IRS before you file your taxes.

The IP PIN is a six-digit number that must be used on a tax return, in addition to a Social Security number, to verify the identity of a taxpayer. Note that, once you opt in to the program, you can’t opt out. If you qualify, you will get a new PIN each year through the mail.

Learn more here. Meanwhile, here’s what to do if someone files a false return in your name.

Thanks Rodger, everybody should have  a separate PIN number, makes a lot of sense if you think about it.

Yes, a separate pin number is good idea because every medical facility I have visited has my social.

On the other hand I always try to make sure I will owe taxes when filing.

Thanks for that identity theft affidavit form link, slupert. I will keep it handy just in case.

I do we them  money, God knows the person that stole my identity is looking for a return. This is the way it works; if I stole your SS# then filed a bogus return, you would be locked out of the system, since I beat you to it. That is the irony. I am trying to give them money, but I am locked out.

I have my identity stolen, but have not had people file....   I believe you can have your credit agency freeze your accounts... This cost money without a police report...   The IRS should send you a copy of the check that was used to cash your so called returned and you can see what bank cashed it and why they cashed it without ID and see from there how you would like to proceed on the identity theft route....  The IRS and government seems to allow illegals to file taxes with random social security numbers with no checking, because many are migrants and it is a way to get money...    Many have jobs and pick a social security number to use to obtain a job in the US, so they could just be filing on what they make, they just happened to be using your social security number...    Following the check that was cashed might bring you to that conclusion, and it is impossible to file against a person that is not even a US Citizen....
