Yep. But what are our options? Ignore it and allow it to spread through the population and form new variants? Previously infected people will be vulnerable to new variants too. The greater the number of people infected, the more variants are likely to arise. We can go back to the Dark Ages and just do nothing.

For me, the choice is clear. Limit contagion as much as possible as they do in Japan. Keep track of new variants with diligent testing, and vaccinations. Fortunately, we've developed the capacity to vaccinate for variants quickly -- as we have for the flu which mutates more rapidly than Covid (so far). We need also to study and develop therapeutics that can mitigate the illness. These are fraught with the same dangers as any treatment -- side effects, future unknown damage to the body, varying efficacy and/or damage to different groups of people, etc.

I'll make another easy prediction. There will be other new pandemics in our future. With global travel and changing climate, it's inevitable, and they could be far worse than this one. New microbes are being found in the permafrost that have been reawakened and viable after eons. We need massive resources for basic research to keep a step ahead of potential horrors. Education in the sciences in this nation is pathetic. Most people don't know the difference between an atom and a molecule or much else either. (One of my pet peeves - how little is taught.)

For today, let's put aside our hand-wringing and have a very Happy (and healthy) Thanksgiving.

That actually happened in "536AD!

Historians pinpoint the very 'worst year' ever to be alive was 536!

"It was just the beginning of a very tough time."

"The 6th-century pandemic was still responsible for destroying at least one-third of the eastern Roman Empire population, leading to its collapse."

Maybe, if it's highly transmissible, which isn't known yet.
