So the question is, this little "test" must have cost them a shtload of cash, so this 'something new' is something they have finances for in the long run, or does SpaceX gt folded in to TSLA like Solar City did.?

Fib, do not bother explaining. We have mostly day traders here. There are no rocket scientists here, and that includes yours truly, who understand the complexity of controlled combustion required inside the most post powerful rocket humans have ever built. I am impressed the rocket did not blow up on the stand with all that powerful fuel inside tanks of first stage rocket. This star ship has enough power to launch 100 astronauts in space or deliver 20 tons of cargo to space station in orbit or reach planet of Jupiter with astronauts inside. I  am told Space-X learned more in 4 minutes of star-ship flight than we have learned about origins of covid in 3 years.

As I understand it, Elon's space career began when he got a government grant to prove his plan to reuse rockets, thus saving NASA billions, if not trillions.

The first 3 crashed. He had enough cash for one more attempt,  which succeed. It was successful because of what they learned from the earlier "failed" attempts.

I am still amazed at every successful touchdown and re-use.

The only real failure is when one fails learn from the previous attempts.

Just ask the Wright brothers... or rather Alfred Nobel.
