Voting with their feet: Venezuelan flight from socialism is now a human wave

The nation of nominally 28 million people has now seen as many as four million flee for their lives,

That's one out of seven Venezuelans, a figure even worse than the one out of ten who have fled Castro's Cuban island for the exact same reason: socialism.  The Venezuelan human waves are just beginning.  And it's going to get a lot worse.  It's time to start thinking about what can be done about this disaster.

Colombia, the country next door, and hardly one that can offer vast welfare packages, has seen the highest absolute numbers, at least 600,000, with only 150,000 in the country legally.  The fact that these Venezuelans are going to Colombia instead of the distant U.S., as Central America's migrants are doing now, is a sign that they are real refugees, not economic migrants.

Coming soon: Mass exodus from NY, CA due to high taxes

In the years to come, millions of people, thousands of businesses, and tens of billions of dollars of net income will flee high-tax states for low-tax states.  This migration has been happening for years.  But the Trump tax bill's cap on the deduction for state and local taxes, or SALT, will accelerate the pace.  The losers will be most of the Northeast, along with California.  The winners are likely to be states like Arizona, Nevada, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

How bad will it get for high-tax states?  Very bad.  We estimate, based on the historical relationship between tax rates and migration patterns, that both California and New York will lose on net about 800,000 residents over the next three years – roughly twice the number that left from 2014-16.

These single issue articles can be very misleading.

California home prices are sky high as a result of the overall success of the economy.  There are so many good jobs there, good scenery, and favorable weather, people would like to go to California.  That works for a while, until prices become unattainable for many.  As your home price appreciates, so do the taxes on the home, socialism or no socialism.  One could as easily say that California is a victim of its own success, more so than of socialism.

In the case of Venezuela, one could easily make the case that their economic collapse is the result of stupid corrupt autocratic rule, perhaps of ignorant voters unable to see where stupid corrupt populist leaders would necessarily take them eventually.  I think that is a bigger problem than socialism.

The poor of Colombia have profoundly rejected socialism.  Colombians instead elected their very own version of Donald Trump

Poor people voted for a genuine conservative out of terror of becoming another Venezuela, because they know what it is up close.

Today, the city streets are strewn with garbage, drug paraphernalia and human feces.  Mentally ill homeless people and drug addicts wander about like zombies, and there are certain areas of the city that you absolutely do not want to visit at night.
