AND WE THINK WE'VE HAD IT BAD!
Makes complaining about no cell service, high gasoline prices, Not enough cable channels, et al, seem a bit ludicrous. I am reminded to be grateful for what I do have...

Tuff times indeed. I can't imagine being the head of a household with kids and no job or place to live. Looks like we have a long way to go before things ever get that bad again. I guess your room wasn't filled with toys, video games, and a TV set when you were a kid..lol just kidding. I take it your childhood wasn't all that bad if your dad was skilled or kept a job..

a lot of skilled workers didnt keep a job - my dad was born in 22 and it split the family as his father went from the east coast to the west looking for carpentry or cabinetmaking work - didnt get any til he got to LA. the depression scarred a generation, here and in europe, but that is why they say, after two generations (70 years) the lessons are lost.

It may not be as far as all think, slums are growing, neighborhoods are getting empty.
Toys, a steel rim from an old wagon wheel with a stick to keep it rolling. I was rich, my neighbor friend had two cans and a string for a telephone. Most cans were used or sold.

And only a few will believe it was that bad ALL over. The new history books down play how bad it was. They tell it being mid-west, and south mostly. I could not find the long soup line pictures we had, hundreds of people at a time in the north east.

How long can you live if your grocery store closes and you have no gas to go to the one that MIGHT be open. Can't happen - think again.

hi Scott, I do think we are headed for another depression. The thick of it will come after the stock markets bottom in 2 - 3 years. I just don't know what a modern version will bring. My mother was born in '36 in Stralsund in what was East Germany. If they hadn't got out to Berlin and beyond before the Russians came, she would have been stuck there in East Germany. Needless to say, I'm sure post-war West Germany was a better place to be (vs. the East), but then it was probably as bad as the Great Depression. There are so many war stories my mother shared with us over the years . It has always given me a great appreciation for what we have today. There is no question that Germany deserved its fate. But try telling that to an 8 year old. cheers, john

The book "The Forgotten Man" is recent but a great retelling of what government and people did during this time. Kind of jaw dropping. And you realize there were so many waves of hope things were getting better, heard there were five distinct ones. For comments on what the politicians were saying at the time, which was just for the first couple years, there is a little book called "Oh Yeah?". It is available from the Vt. company that has all the old funky books from that time. People who have not studied history are showing up on TV and running the government. So expect we will repeat the past. My grandparents ran a bakery in Queens, NY and the bread lines led to them! They lived so frugally their entire lives and never trusted the stock market.. -Jim

I read "The Forgotten Man" and I liked "Freedom from Fear" by Kennedy much better. They both cover the same period. I highly recommend it.
