STOCKS - ACTION ALERT -
What is the bottom line? The bottom line is the Copper has turned south, the Chinese market is faltering, bonds are rallying and the leading Dow Transports could not post a new high late last week. We are setting up for another correction. Bulls need to see if Thursday and Friday's lows hold depending on which index you are viewing. There is still a chance of a renewed rally into a possible cyclical peak in August. That peak could be higher than the current peak or it could be lower. We will not know until we get there. Meanwhile, following August the cyclical picture significantly deteriorates.
Friday was the third consecutive day of range-bound trading for the stock market and was even more lethargic than the previous two. The market indexes did hit one-month highs Friday morning as ebbing euro zone concerns lifted sentiment and as a report from Caterpillar of Asian demand for machinery bolstered materials stocks, but the bulls couldn't make anything of it. Even quadruple witching options expiration had little effect on the market. The Dow was up 16.47 to 10450.64, the S&P rose 1.47 to 1117.51, and the NASDAQ gained 2.64 to 2309.80. Volume was down slightly at the NYSE but up a bit at the NASDAQ. It was low at both exchanged relative to "normal" levels. Breadth was slightly positive.
Five sectors closed up Friday, three were down, and one was unchanged. But sector action did not show a move to or away from risk. However, there were some clear trends. Commodity stocks did well (XLB +0.58% and XLE +0.63%) as precious metals and crude oil gained. Financials also gained (XLF +0.61%) after Bloomberg reported Citigroup (C +1.26%) plans to raise more than $3 billion for its private-equity and hedge funds. Industrials rallied (XLI +0.40%) after Caterpillar (CAT +1.39%) reported its May machinery sales rose 11% and its Asia sales climbed 38% last month, but global engine sales fell 10% in May.
On the other side, consumer stocks did poorly (XLP -0.34% and XLY -0.31%) as Retailers (XRT -0.76%) continued to suffer from the disappointed economic news from earlier in the week.
Considering the market hit a one-month high Friday morning, one would have expected the bulls to try to rally the market. The lack of any big move higher has to be disappointing for them, especially considering the good news out of Europe (see US Dollar section). The market is at a tipping point here. We could very well have already seen the summer rally.
--------------------------------------------
DOW TRANSPORTS - ACTION ALERT -
The Dow Jones Transportation Average went with the flow on Friday, rising the same exact 0.13% as the S&P 500, closing at 4433.60 up 5.75 for the session.
The Dow Transports were unable to post a new recovery high Thursday and Friday posting a negative divergence.
Delta Air (DAL) fell 3.38% while JetBlue (JBLU) rose 1.72%, though no major news was announced by or about either company.
---------------------------------------------
GOLD and METALS - ACTION ALERT -
Gold soared to a new all-time record high on Friday as traders chased returns amid the lethargic trading in the stock market the last few days. Gold gained 11.30 to 1256.50 and traded as high as 1263.50. Other precious metals follower gold higher with silver rising 0.44 to 19.17, platinum gaining 14 to 1589, and palladium up 8 to 488. Copper though fell 0.0215 to 2.8840.
We are currently long CEF (gold/silver ETF), our only index position at the moment, with a nice gain.
I remain on a TIMER DIGEST 'Buy' signal with the view that since we're in a 20 year uptrend why horse around? At the same time the cyclical picture suggests we could headed for a correction, but as we've just witnessed a correction could come from higher highs. I will trade accordingly, but keep holding on to those coins in the safe deposit box.
As an indication of rising investor interest in gold, holdings at SPDR Gold Trust rose to a fresh record on Thursday, the latest day for which statistics are available. The fund, the largest exchange-traded fund backed by gold, reported holdings of 1,307.96 metric tons of gold (1,441.77 short tons.)
With gold trading at an all-time high and the other precious metals moving higher as well, I highly recommend you check out the weekly VR Gold Letter which provides more intensive coverage of Gold and Gold/Silver/Platinum/Palladium and Copper shares.

---------------------------------------------
BONDS - ACTION ALERT -
Treasuries consolidated gains Friday after reaching their highest levels in two weeks as traders closed out some of their safe-haven positions and moved money back into stocks and placed speculative bets on gold. The long bond future declined 15/32 to 123 30/32.
Bonds are rallying because investors are anticipating another large sell-off in equities and are seeking safety ahead of the next storm. It is as simple as that.
Treasuries may also face renewed competition from the corporate market, where issuance has been unusually low for several weeks. On Thursday, the corporate market sprang to live though as French oil giant Total sold $2.5 billion and computer-technology distributor Avnet issued $300 million. JP Morgan sold $1.25 billion while Bank America issued $3 billion. HSBC may try to sell $300 million in debt on Friday. Earlier this week, Lincoln National offered $750 million and Prudential Financial sold $1 billion. Also in the market recently, Toyota Motor Credit sold $2 billion and biotech firm Genzyme sold $1 billion in debt to finance a share repurchase. Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical Industries sold $2.5 billion to finance an acquisition and repay debt. So far in June, companies have sold $36.7 billion in debt, according to Informa. That's a 52% drop from amount sold last year by this point in the month.
---------------------------------------------
CRUDE OIL - ACTION ALERT -
Oil moved with stocks on Friday, as it most often does these days, as fears of a European crisis eased. Crude oil settled up 0.39 at 77.18.
Volume had been positive in Crude Oil which is why I was trading OIL on the long side. I am leaning more positive than negative until I see volume flip to the sell side. Obviously, any breakout in hostilities which is inevitable will drive Crude much higher. The liberal left can try and appease their enemies only so long, until they slapped hard enough in the face to wake them up to reality.
Natural gas continued its contrarian trading on Friday. Recently, more often than not, natural gas has moved inversely to crude. On Friday, with crude up, natural gas fell 0.165 to 4.997.
---------------------------------------------
US DOLLAR - ACTION ALERT -
The US Dollar Index fell and Euro rose on Friday as fears of a European crisis eased. The US Dollar Index dropped 0.127 to 85.564, its lowest level in four weeks.
Following a Negative Volume Reversal right off the top on June 8, the US Dollar has been declining. There is no sign of a bottom quite yet, but I'm watching. If the Dollar has truly topped, equities and especially commodities could continue to climb.
European Union leaders agreed Thursday that the results of "stress tests" on European banks will be published no later than the second half of July. European officials hope that the results will help improve confidence in the banking sector. Momentum for the move came after the governor of the Bank of Spain on Wednesday said the central bank would release results of stress tests on Spanish banks.
The euro is still significantly depressed to stage a greater rally, but I am currently on the sidelines with regard to a trade.
International Monetary Fund managing director Dominique Strauss-Kahn said Friday that the Spanish government is committed to economic reform and that the reforms go in the right direction. "These reforms are something that will help the Spanish economy in the long term and for many years," Strauss-Kahn said at a joint press conference with Spain's Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero after the two had met for talks. Speculation that Spain could require a bailout eased Thursday after the country staged a successful debt auction.
The Bank of Mexico kept its overnight interbank funding rate at 4.5% on Friday, as widely expected by currency analysts. "Mexico's downturn was notably stronger and the recovery is slightly weaker," strategists at Commerzbank said before the decision. "We expect the central bank to take its first rate step next year."
---------------------------------------------
COMPANY NEWS:
Moody's downgraded BP PLC debt on Friday by three notches to A2 from Aa2 . These and other actions collectively affected approximately $25 billion of the company's debt securities. The rating agency cited the "worsening impact" expected from the Gulf oil disaster caused by BP's Macondo well. Both the oil giant's senior unsecured and BP-backed subsidiary long-term debt was slashed to A2 ratings. Moody's also cut its issuer rating on BP to A3 from Aa3. BP inched up 0.16%.
Drugstore giants Walgreen Co. and CVS Caremark Corp. resolved their differences Friday, signing a multi-year contract to keep Walgreens in the Caremark pharmacy network. Only a week earlier, Walgreen announced it wouldn't service new or renewed CVS plans, and CVS responded it would terminate Walgreen's participation in the network entirely. WAG rose 2.80% and CVS gained 1.85%.

Canadian TSX, TSX Venture and Canadian Dollar Commentary for our Canadian clients updated for Monday, June 21.
The TSX was up as much as much as 71.95 Friday morning as gold miners led the way high, but fell all afternoon and closed with a loss as a strong Canadian Dollar hurt the market. By the end of the session, all market sectors posted losses. The TSX fell 18.38 or 0.15% to 11927.59. It traded as high as 12,017.92 as compared tot he 12,210.39 bull market high from May 13 - still a very significant recovery due in part to a recovering natural resource market and a weaker US Dollar.
Canada's index of leading economic indicators advanced for a 12th straight month in May, led by gains in new orders for manufacturers. The index rose 0.9 percent, Statistics Canada said. Economists said the index would gain 0.7 percent. Overall, six of the index's 10 components increased.
Potash Corp. declined 2.32 percent to C$101.10 after UBS analyst Joe Dewhurst reduced his 2011 potash forecast to $370 a metric ton from $450 a ton. Dewhurst wrote that potash, which traded at more than $900 a ton in 2008, will remain below $550 a ton until at least 2020.
Forest-products company Tembec Inc. soared 27.59 percent to C$2.22. The company said earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization should reach C$47 million to C$53 million this quarter from C$32 million in the quarter ending in March.
Soft drink maker Cott Corp. had the biggest decline in the S&P/TSX with a 8.77 percent retreat to C$7.39 after Stifel Financial Corp. analyst Mark Swartzberg cut his rating on the stock to "hold" from "buy." Swartzberg told clients Wal-Mart is selling other soft drinks at the same price or cheaper than the Sam's Choice private-label beverages Cott makes for the retailer.

CANADIAN TSX Venture:
With gold rallying to a new all-time high, the Venture moved higher thanks to its many gold mining firms. The TSX gained 6.80 or 0.46% to close at 1488.18, just shy of resistance at 1490, though resistance at 1514 from the May 31 high looks much more resilient.

--------------------------------------------
THE CANADIAN DOLLAR (using the FXC Exchange Traded Fund):
Thanks to a weak US Dollar, big rally in gold and other precious metals, and a strong leading economic indicators report, the Canadian Dollar rallied to its highest level in over a month. FXC rose 0.53 to close at 97.42, which also happened to be the session's high.
Resistance is 98.27, 99.29, 100.00, 102.00, 110.00. Support is 91.82, 91.00, 89.75, 87.50 and 85.18.
