STOCKS - ACTION ALERT -

The stock market finished a down week with a day of range-bound trading. The bears did manage to push the indexes to their lowest levels in over two weeks but the market recovered and finished mixed on the day. The Dow was down 8.99 to 10143.81, S&P up 3.07 to 1076.76, and NASDAQ rose 6.06 to 2223.48. Despite the lethargic trading, volume was heavy and breadth was decidedly positive.

So the bulls have something good to hold on to, but they must remember that the market (SPX) still fell 3.65% last week and that Friday's action was not entire positive, especially with the Dow Industrials closing lower. As for VRTrader, we had been short the market, but closed out position Friday afternoon while the market was still down, taking a small profit with us. We have not had a losing equity index trade in well over a month now.

End of the month and end of the quarter window dressing along with the advent of new 401(k) funds July 1+ are short-term positives for the market. The S&P 400 Midcap and the Russell 2000 via the MDY and IWM long ETFs posted 'key reversal' pattersn to the upside Friday suggesting further upside followthrough. For these patterns to be valid we must hold Friday's lows.

Still, I am remain on my TIMER DIGEST 'Sell' signal with the belief, despite the risk of a 'summer rally' perhaps even into mid-August that the TREND is down and the risk of a significant decline increases as we pass through summer. The potential for the Dow Industrials to decline under 9000 is still very real in my work. As my rants on Thursday afternoon point out in the column entitled 'Why I don't read the financial media', lipstick is being put on the pig day after day as we are being lied to by the very real government-media complex about the state of the economy, housing and financial markets.

As far as short-term trading decisions are concerned, Platinum subscribers know I am very, very flexible and if I see this market going higher first (for whatever reason) I will get out of way or even perhaps jump on board the train for a short period of time. All we're trying to do here is make a buck and avoid a lot of trouble. Recall, I told you to SELL before the now so-called 'flash-crash'.

Economic data came is as expected Friday and the market didn't move much as a result. Earlier in the week, the market got hit hard by disappointing housing data, which is calling the recovery in housing and the entire economy into question. With the summer doldrums upon us, especially with the long Independence Day weekend, any piece of economic news or news about the debt crisis in Europe could move this market hard and fast. But on slow news days and many traders on vacation, trading will be slow and boring, especially on summer Fridays like last Friday of this one coming up.

Financials were the best performers on Friday (XLF +2.70%) following an agreement between the House and Senate of most significant increase in the regulation of U.S. banks since the Great Depression, placing new restrictions on the nation's biggest lenders, reining in the Federal Reserve and crafting new consumer protections. However, the bill carried easier restrictions, such as on derivatives sales, than had been floated.

Materials was the second best performer (XLB +1.48%) as both precious and industrial metals staged big rallies on Friday.

Consumer Discretionary (XLY -0.29%) traded as low as 30.47, testing its May and June lows of 30.24 and 30.43 and its 200 day moving average at 30.35.

Consumer Staples (XLP -1.03%) was the worst performer as Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Wal-Mart, and Walgreen all more than two percent, though there was no news to account for the decline.

In addition to being happy about the increased volume and positive breadth, the bulls are look at the fact that Small Cap stocks (IWM +1.72%) seriously outperformed Large Caps (+0.42%) on Friday. The IWM dipped below its 200 day moving average on Thursday and Friday but closed well above it.

--------------------------------------------
DOW TRANSPORTS - ACTION ALERT -

Another bright spot for the bulls was the performance of the Dow Transports on Friday which, as you know, I consider a leading indicator. The Dow Jones Transportation Average jumped 34.20 or 0.81% on Friday to close at 4241.20. But before the bulls get too excited, the Dow Transports actually underperformed for the week, falling 192.40 or 4.34%.

Oversold but still now seeing any signs of accumulation in this leading market indicator.

---------------------------------------------
GOLD and METALS - ACTION ALERT -

Precious metals rallied after Greek default swaps hit yet another new high. Gold is again approaching its 1266.30 high, closing up 12.30 on Friday at 1255.70. But the real story is probably the rally in copper. Copper jumped 0.0900 on Friday and 0.2115 for the week, closing at 3.0955, its highest level in a month. Silver followed gold higher, gaining 0.42 to 19.10. Platinum was up 10 to 1569 and palladium gained 5 to 477.

Watch the euro and ETFs such as GLD for hints of short-term market direction.

I recommend you check out the weekly VR Gold Letter which provides more intensive coverage of Gold and Gold/Silver/Platinum/Palladium and Copper shares at www.vrgoldletter.com. If you are a Platinum or Silver subscriber, special discount rates are offered. Please contact my office for details: mark.vrtrader@gmail.com or 928-282-1275.
---------------------------------------------
BONDS - ACTION ALERT -

Treasuries rallied Friday as traders looked for safety because of the rising CDS rate for Greek debt and weak economic data the US received last week. The long bond future gained 10/32 to 125 11/31. I am still in the deflation camp. Bonds, cash and/or Gold are the only safe places for your money unless your risk tolerance can handle inverse ETFs for the overall equity market.

---------------------------------------------
CRUDE OIL - ACTION ALERT -

Oil staged a big rally Friday as traders worried about a potential tropical cyclone brewing in the Caribbean. Crude oil rose 2.35 to 78.86 and natural gas was up 0.113 to 4.861.

Volume is creeping in to the long side, probably due the weather forecast. An area of low pressure is centered about 150 miles east-northeast of Cabo Gracias a Dios, a cape located on the border between Honduras and Nicaragua, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said in an outlook published at 2 a.m. Eastern time Friday. This weather system could become a tropical depression before it reaches Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in a couple of days. Also, the system has a 60% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours, the center said.

Another reason for oil's rally Friday: Venezuela's government has seized control of 11 oil rigs owned by U.S. driller Helmerich & Payne (HP +0.1%) , which shut them down because the state oil company was behind on payments. Obviously, the fear is that Venezuela may seize even more oil rigs.

---------------------------------------------
US DOLLAR - ACTION ALERT -

The US Dollar Index fell 0.421 on Friday to 85.312 ahead of meetings of the Group of Eight and Group of Twenty leading industrialized nations in Toronto that are expected to focus on efforts to support economic growth while minding the problems that can follow oversized deficits.

The Dollar has clearly hit a short to near term top with volume signals still to the downside. However, we are holding support around 85.00, so stay tuned.

China's currency strengthened to a new high against the U.S. dollar Friday, signaling Beijing's new attitude toward its appreciation and potentially avoiding a showdown over exchange rates at this weekend's Group of 20 summit. The yuan ended trading Friday at 6.79 per dollar, rising 0.1% from Thursday's close. The People's Bank of China set the daily parity rate at 6.7896 per dollar, a level that represented a record in terms of yuan strength against the dollar.

---------------------------------------------
ECONOMIC NEWS:

The government lowered its estimate of how much the economy grew in the first quarter of the year, noting that consumers spent less than it previously thought. Gross domestic product rose by 2.7 percent in the January-to-March period, the Commerce Department said Friday. That was less than the 3 percent estimate for the quarter that the government released last month. It was also much slower than the 5.6 percent pace in the previous quarter. In normal times, 2.7 percent growth would be considered healthy. But it's relatively weak for a recovery after a steep recession. After the last sharp downturn in the early 1980s, GDP grew at rates of 7 percent to 9 percent for five straight quarters. Final sales, which exclude inventories, increased at a 0.8% annual pace, revised down from 1.4%.

U.S. consumer sentiment was the most optimistic in more than two years in June, but remained far below normal levels, according to a survey released Friday by Reuters and the University of Michigan. The UMich index rose to 76.0 in late June, up from 73.6 in May and 75.5 in mid-June. It was the highest since January 2008, the month after the recession began. Economists were expecting the UMich index to come in at 75.5.

The cost of insuring Greek debt declined slightly on Friday afternoon after hitting a fresh record high earlier in the session. CDS on Greek debt declined 2.23 basis points to 1,124.62. The swaps hit a high of 1,131 basis points earlier in the session. The swaps are a type of derivative that pays out in the event of default.

COMPANY NEWS:

Oracle said its fourth-quarter net income rose to $2.4 billion, or 46 cents a share, from $1.9 billion, or 38 cents a share, in the same period last year. Revenue for the period ended May 31 rose 39% to $9.5 billion. Excluding special items, Oracle said earnings for the quarter were 60 cents a share. ORCL gained 1.98%.

Research In Motion Ltd. posted a 20% increase in fiscal first-quarter net income as the BlackBerry maker shipped 11.2 million handsets. RIM also said it will repurchase up to 31 million shares over the next 12 months. Revenue rose 24% to $4.24 billion in the three months ended May 29. RIM was expected to earn $1.35 a share, adjusted for onetime items, on revenue of $4.35 billion, according to analysts. For the second quarter, RIM predicted adjusted earnings of $1.33 to $1.40 a share, with revenue ranging from $4.4 billion to $4.6 billion. The forecast was roughly in line with Wall Street's estimates. RIMM declined 10.84%.

BP said total costs of cleaning the Gulf of Mexico oil spill reached $2.35 billion. Additionally, Nomura analyst Alastair Syme said in a note published Friday that the company's funding could be threatened as the ill-fated Macondo well continues to leak oil. He said that the roughly $15 billion of current liquidity looks adequate to deal with committed acquisitions, spill cleanup costs and the phased funding of the $20 billion escrow account. He suggests the company sell roughly $10 billion of equity, backed possibly by sovereign wealth funds. BP fell another 5.98%, hitting a 14-year low and losing more than $100 billion in market capitalization since the Gulf of Mexico oil spill began.

KB Home reported a narrower quarterly loss as orders for new homes slipped 23% from the year-earlier period. Ticonderoga Securities analyst Stephen East said the weak order numbers "missed our estimate by a mile" and that he was disappointed and frustrated with the "march down in gross margin for the second quarter in a row." KB Home's quarterly results were "somewhat disappointing," Deutsche Bank said in a research note. "Given recent demand data points investors may have been expecting weaker order volumes; however the surprise in the second quarter was lower gross margins." KBH dropped 9.00%.
