The January Barometer - Everyone Is Watching - Believers And Non-Believers

--------------------------------------------
Commentary below from TIMER DIGEST's #1 Intermediate Market Timer for the 10-year period ending in 2007 AND the #2 Intermediate Market Timer for the 10-year period ending in 2009 - Mark Leibovit

Current TIMER DIGEST Signals:

Stocks - Bull - Potential upside well into the 1300s or higher near-term and 1400s or higher intermediate term, but will there be a shakeout in January or February first? I suppose it really doesn't matter if you're already long the market.

Gold - Bull - 1500+ next target here, followed by 1700. We may now be on our way.

Bonds - Neutral - Technicals call for a continuing Bear, that is, higher interest rates insofar as the long Treasuries are concerned.

STOCKS - ACTION ALERT -

More low volume and range bound trading on Friday as traders got an early start to the New Year's holiday weekend. With no economic news, the only movement we saw was some end-of-year window-dressing and stocks moved by corporate news. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 7.80 points, or 0.07%, at 11577.51, up 11% from where it began 2010. The Nasdaq Composite shed 10.11, or 0.38%, to 2652.87, although that's a 17% increase from where it began the year. The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged down 0.24, or 0.02%, to 1257.64, up 13% for the year. Breadth was mixed, just like the indexes.

Over the last seven trading days, the S&P has traded in a range of just 11.12 point, less than one percent of the S&P value. The last time the market had such low volatility was back in January 1994.

Even the individual sectors barely moved Friday. The best performing sector (XLE) was up just 0.15% while the worst (XLY) was down 0.21%.

However, there was some movement with Small Caps (IWM) declining 0.66% and Mid Caps (MDY) down 0.59%. With end-of-year window-dressing, funds want to show that they owned the big and famous names, even if they didn't do as well. For the year, Small Caps did best (IWM +26.9%) with Mid Caps right behind it (MDY +26.0%) and Large Caps lagging behind (SPY +14.6%).

The January Barometer, which was devised by Stock Trader's Almanac founder Yale Hirsch in 1972 exists primarily because of the passage in 1933 of the 20th "Lame Duck" Amendment to the Constitution. This moved Inauguration Day from March 4 to Jan. 20 and changed the day newly elected senators and representatives take office.

Since 1934, new Congresses now convene the first week of January instead of December; 13 months after they were elected, or March when new presidents took office.

The movement of these two market influencing events into January created the January Barometer and since 1933 it has essentially been "As January goes, so goes the year." There have been only five major errors since 1950 for a 91.4% accuracy ratio, 74.1% including the 10 flat years.

FYI: The "January Effect" on the other hand is the general tendency for stocks to outperform in January and specifically for small-cap stocks to do much better than large-cap stocks in the month of January. Despite its horrible performance in 2008, January is the anchor to the best consecutive three-month span, November through January.
-------------------------------------------
DOW TRANSPORTS - ACTION ALERT -

Transportation stocks also finished little changed with a lack of economic and corporate news to drive the group. The Dow Jones Transportation Average fell 1.85 or 0.04% to 5106.75.

Leibovit Volume Reversal analysis points the Dow Tranports 10% higher in the months ahead. That equates to the Dow Transports taken out the May 30, 2008 record high of 5536.57.

--------------------------------------------
GOLD and METALS - ACTION ALERT -

The metals finished the year they traded most of it: with big gains and new highs. A weak US Dollar and end-of-year window-dressing led to a final wave of buying before the books were closed on 2010. Gold jumped 17.50 to 1421.60, nearing its all-time high of 1432.50. Silver rallied 0.45 to 30.91 and hit a new 30-year high of 30.98. Platinum gained 22 to 1769. Palladium rallied 13 to 800 and hit a 10-year high of 808. Copper acted strongest of all, rising 0.0845 to 4.4470 and hitting an all-time high of 4.4520.

Gold notched a yearly advance of 30%, the precious metal's 10th consecutive annual gain. Silver's yearly surge was a hefty 84%. Platinum logged an annual advance of 21%. Palladium jumped 96%. Copper rose 33% in 2010.

--------------------------------------------
URANIUM - ACTION ALERT

Ux U3O8 Prices* (Uranium)
December 27, 2010 Posting
Spot: $62.50 UNCHANGED. Bull market high in the cash market was $138.00.

The January Uranium Futures closed at $62.10. Uranium futures recent his a new bear market low of 40.00. June 13, 2007 hosted the bull market high of 154.95. Major support lies well under the market at $36.00.

The spot price of uranium quadrupled from 2004 to 2007. When it hit $138/lb, uranium became a certified bubble, which has now burst.

--------------------------------------------
BONDS - ACTION ALERT-

Treasuries rallied Friday on light volume in a holiday shortened session. The long-bond future gained 1 4/32 to 122 4/32.

Yields on benchmark 10-year Treasurys fell 8 basis points to 3.29%. Yields on 2-year notes fell 5 basis point to 0.593%. Thirty-year bond yields dropped 8 basis points to 4.338%.

--------------------------------------------
CRUDE OIL - ACTION ALERT -

Oil started Friday with a loss as the stock market fell, but then rallied to a two-year high as traders wanted to show clients they participated in oil's big rally. Crude oil hit a low of 89.05 Friday morning before rallying to a high of 92.06 and closing at 91.38, up 1.54 for the day.

The most active contract has gained 8.6% this month and 15% this year. It's the second straight year of gains for oil, though the 2010 advance pales beside the 78% rebound in 2009.

--------------------------------------------
US DOLLAR - ACTION ALERT -

On Friday, the US Dollar Index broken through its 78.819 low from December 14 after German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for actions to solidify the euro's standing, but the Dollar recovered back over that level meaning that Dollar is still stuck in a trading range. The US Dollar Index fell 0.493 to 79.028 after trading as low as 78.775.

Intra-day Friday, I wrote: "with the light volume, I'd wait for follow-through before believing this is a break of support and the start of a new trend. On December 14, the US Dollar Index also broke through support, but quickly moved back into its trading range." And that's exactly what happened on Friday. In the end, the US Dollar Index has been stuck in a trading range of 78.775 to 80.665 for more than a month now.

The Euro rose 0.72% against the Dollar after German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, "Europe has faced a big test in recent months. We have to strengthen the euro. It is not just about our money. The euro is much more than a currency."

Singapore's economy expanded at a record 14.7 percent in 2010, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Friday, in a sharp recovery from last year's recession for the city-state. It was the best performance ever for Singapore's trade-led economy, surpassing the previous record 13.8 percent growth achieved in 1970. The annual 14.7 percent surge announced by Lee is also at the top end of the government's growth forecast of 13-15 percent. For next year, growth will moderate to 4.0-6.0 percent, Lee said. The Singapore Dollar gained 0.41% against the Dollar.

--------------------------------------------
CORPORATE NEWS:

CVS Caremark said Friday that it agreed to buy the Medicare Part D business of Universal American, a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan sponsor, for about $1.25 billion. After payment of other transaction related expenses, Universal American shareholders are expected to receive approximately $12.80 a share to $13 a share, the companies said. The acquisition will more than double the size of CVS Caremark's Medicare Part D program, CVS said, adding that the transaction will add to per-share profit in its first full year. Medicare Part D is the federally subsidized prescription benefit program offered to Medicare beneficiaries, citizens who are 65 years and older or who otherwise qualify through disability. CVS fell 0.66% while UAM rallied 39.97%.

U.K. newspaper the Daily Mail said Sony is considering a $40-a-share bid for big-screen movie company Imax, with Walt Disney interested as well. Imax Chief Executive Richard Gelfond and Chairman Bradley Wechsler are thought to be pushing for a sale to Sony, according to the report. IMAX gained 4.43%, SNE rose 0.39%, and this inched up 0.08%.

Borders Group fell after media reports quoted the company saying it could delay payments to some publishers, as part of an effort to refinance debt. The book retailer also said there were no guarantees those efforts would be successful. BGP declined 22.40%.

Canadian TSX, TSX Venture and Canadian Dollar Commentary for our Canadian clients updated for Monday, January 3:

Like the US market, the Canadian market held pretty steady in low-volume trading. The TSX inched up 8.81 or 0.07% to 13443.22. Most sectors were down, but a rally in Metals & Mining lifted the index to a small gain.

SUMMARY of TSX:

All Time High: 14715 (May, 2008)
5 Year Low: 8123 (February, 2009)

Upside potential is easily back to the record high of 14715, but a more conservative target would be 14,240.

ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steelmaker, increased its offer for Canada's Baffinland Iron Mines Corp. as it seeks to win over shareholders amid a three- month takeover battle. ArcelorMittal bid C$1.40 ($1.40) a share in cash for all Baffinland shares, the Luxembourg-based company said in a statement. That's 27 percent more than its original offer and compares with a C$1.40 hostile bid for 60 percent of Baffinland's stock from Nunavut Iron Ore Acquisition Inc. this week. Baffinland advanced 5 cents, or 3.6 percent, to C$1.43, up 177% for the year.
