I used to enjoy oatmeal and still eat a bit of steel cut oats (for trace GLA / taste and gut sticking quality). But last year came upon some interesting information about grain contamination and how common it is ... didn't pay much attention until I opened a NEW box of oatmeal (containing two sealed plastic bags of raw oats) and I found that one of the still sealed bags had about a 1/8 of a cup of visibly living bugs moving happily around the bottom of the bag.
Needless to say, this was a turn off for eating raw oats, so to slightly offset the risk I now put all stored grains in the freezer for a couple of days before using (though boiling would also kill any nasty stuff). If you're eating raw stored grains, you may be getting some extra bits of protein.
Just something to consider.

But I also like to freeze certain dry goods ... just cheap insurance.
