I'm short soft drink manufacturers. This is just the start ...

On last nights National news (which I RARELY bother to look at ... most is garbage):

Supposed "new finding" - "Study reveals that diet drinks contribute to obesity."

I've been telling my patients that for over 15 years and most people just thought I was crazy. But truth always comes out ... eventually. It is, however, difficult to swim against "conventional" wisdom (an oxymoron!). There's much more I know to be true about food and health, but it will take another 10 years to show up in the popular media. All things in time.

The reason diet drinks contribute to obesity is on my "Australian Secret Food Cures" CD. See link below.

The so called, "breaking news" is:

Epidemiologist Sharon Fowler, from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, presented research data on soda consumption to the American Diabetes Association.

"What we saw was that the more diet sodas a person drinks, the more weight they were likely to gain," she says.

Of course main stream media will downplay the importance of this ... too much money involved.

Health and long life to all, :P Cola :bear:

I thought it was common sense kind of like weed and feed that you put on the lawn. The want you to get big so you drink more cola and they put the special additive in there to make your fat cells screwing happily to create more happy fat cells. Well, you got to get CSUH then because that is supposed to burn calories. :)

Hello friend, Maybe cola is like "Weed and Feed." But I think it's more like DDT ;) As Jack Lalane liked to say "If man made it, don't eat it." In any case ... lovin the Coke downtrend. Stop is in place ... no risk to short this one. Just watching, from afar. C.C. :)

Most brand name diet sodas have no calories. Therefore they cannot lead to any weight gain. Metabolism is very simple. Calories consumed minus calories burned equals calories left over. If you consume more calories than you use in day, you'll have calories left over. 3500 calories weighs one pound. If you consume fewer calories than you burn in a day you will recruit calories from your storage (fat, glycogen, muscle, protein). It is impossible to gain weight from zero calories. Law of nature. Scientific fact. mm

But, I often find myself VERY hungry in the afternoon if I've been drinking diet soda. I'd not be surprised that one's body rebels against being fed Nutrasweet after a while and sez, "Gimme some chips, dammit!" I am sure, however, that I'm not gaining a bit from the diet soda's by themselves and am doing better than if I were having regular cola's at 150 cals each. Mark

Hi Mark,

Yes, I think you're right that the diet soda probably stimulates your appetite.

I worked for an Australian Endocrinologist once, and his favourite expression to diabetic patients was "Stop stimulating your palate." I didn't really understand, back then, why he said this, but I now believe that there are many food "tastes" that we humans are simply NOT meant to be sticking in our mouths. Some people say that aspartame turns into a type of acid in the body and that a body that is more acidic wants to hold on to fat in an attempt to neutralize the acid. It's a theory.

I also think that food companies make many processed foods that intentionally trigger addictive tendencies ... maybe aspartame just makes us crave more food. I'm not sure. In any case, whats wrong with ice water??? Why do we always have to be fizzed out on some sharp tastes? They just become habitual. In any case, enjoy whatever you wish.

Best, C.C.

I just get a pit in my stomach. Of course, I can address that with a Wasa fiber cracker and 2 Tbls of low fat cottage cheese. M

Sounds kinda dull ... how about a strawberry or cinnamin zone bar. I like these and they REALLY make you feel satisfied for several hours because of the protein and good fat content. they stay with you ... and don't give a sugar candy bar high - followed by crash and craving more sugar.

Just a suggestion.
