Here's something to boil your blood. Here's an excerpt:

August 10, 2007 (Rockville, MD) - The FDA is warning physicians and consumers to steer clear of several "cholesterol-lowering" supplements that may illegally contain lovastatin.
FDA testing revealed that several brands of nonprescription "red yeast extract" supplements, marketed as Red Yeast Rice, Red Yeast Rice/Policosonal Complex, and Cholestrix, contained lovastatin, a prescription drug. Not surprisingly, the agent is not named in the list of product ingredients. The products are manufactured by Nature's Value Inc, Kabco Inc, and Sunburst Biorganics, respectively, and sold over the internet by the manufacturers, or in the case of Red Yeast Rice, by Swanson Healthcare Products.

Here's the whole link: http://www.fda.gov/m...07.htm#redyeast

Wow.... so you go to the health food store and buy "Yeast" to lower your cholesterol. Unknown to you it is filled with Mevacor(lovastatin) a generic "statin" from Merck which is wel known and very effective at lowering choleserol. And you go get a cholesterol blood test and your numbers look good, so you tell your doctor, "See, we don't need no stinkin pills, we've got Red Yeast from the Health food store..."

Breaks my heart when people take advantage of people... caveat emptor

and check out the swindler's web site: www.swansonsvitamins.com ....makes me sick!

Swanson does tons of advertising and has very low prices. Something always smelled fishy about that company.
