Does anyone have an idea what breed it might be?
It doesn't look like a mongrel.

coat, shape of head, lope ears suggests a blue merle catahoula leopard dog. would need more pics of body, head, size info etc... if that right eye is "cracked" (two colors) and not a photo error it's further evidence..

The right eye is cracked for sure. I thought it was a defect.
I forgot to mention that it is a puppy. We guess about 4 months old.
Also, it seem to be smart. It also has a very loud ear piercing bark.
I am going to try and get some more pictures. It is amazing how hard it is to get a good picture of a puppy. It moves alot and tries to bite the camera.
It is definately a keeper.
I have never heard of a merle catahoula leopard dog.
Thanks
James

Yes, North American Trading Hound. When they're puppies, they are 100% white. Yours is older... the dark colorations are bruises.

james, "merle" is just a term for a coat color variation. can you guess it's weight? your texas location also adds to the chance it's a catahoula. 1 pic of the head from the side would help a bit. the pic you posted shows a head/muzzle that does not match a heeler or cattle dog.
scroll down on this link and there are 3 pics of catahoula pups, see if there's a resemblence.
http://www.catahoula....com/swdogs.htm
also from that website.......
Preferred size from 20-26", weight 50-90 lbs, with a few individuals larger although most males average 60-70 lbs in lean working condition, & about 24" tall. Short haired, long tail, natural flop ear (like a Dalmatian ear), they come in every color of the rainbow, but are best known for a blue/grey base with black/liver spots ("blue Leopard"), tan legs and face, white toes and chest. Many variations on this general pattern. Spots occur in all colors. Blue/glass or parti-colored "marbled" or "cracked"eyes are common in every litter. Often a dog will have eyes of two different colors.
try baiting it with treats (use a helper) to pose it when taking pics.
you may have a real interesting breed there james with a lot of american history behind it.
