Henry, forgive my ignorance as I am a futures trader, but just how does one buy or sell the XAU?
It is a collection of 10 mining stocks, right? I trade through Interactive Brokers, and I cannot seem to even get a quotes on it without some sort of subscription. So, how liquid is this stock and how did you take you short position in it, at what price and with what protective buy stop?
Alternatively, are suggesting that anyone following along with you just pick any gold mining stock right now and short it?
Please be clear when you refer to trading an actual index. I look forward to your clarifications.

you can buy puts on it - PHLX I believe.
but you also answered your question, I think, you can look at the stocks in the index and determine which ones are the best short candidates and short them. If you only trade futures, I guess Im surprised you care about stocks at all, but you would have to trade the SSFs for the XAU components you decided were the best shorts, if there are SSF for them - there are for ABX, NEM and GG, for example.
