Oklahoma doctor has stunning treatment for spider bites
With spiders coming in contact with humans during fall cleanup, Dr. Robert Unsell, an Oklahoma City hand surgeon says he's been successful in zapping spider bites with a low-voltage stun gun.
Dr. Robert Unsell uses a controversial low-voltage stun gun to treat fiddleback, black widow and other spider bites, as well as snake bites.
“I've treated probably hundreds of people and haven't had a failure yet,” said Unsell, 63.
Though medical grade stun guns are available for about $100, the mini stun guns are sold over the Internet for about $20.
Unsell said his garage door opener-sized device packs about 30,000 volts, compared with about 250,000 to 500,000 volts from a stun gun.
Unsell said the zap deactivates the chemical makeup of the venom in spider and snake bites, and insect stings.
Outdoor enthusiasts are buying them to carry along in case they are bitten or stung when a doctor isn't nearby, Unsell said.
