STOCKS - ACTION ALERT -

The stock market finished a short holiday week with a whimper, much as it has traded for the last two weeks. A series of economic reports did little to move the market after they produced few surprises and were largely as expected. Nevertheless, the Dow Industrials closed at a two-year high as the trend remains bullish despite the slow action of late. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 14 points, or 0.12%, to 11573.49, its highest closing level since August 2008. However, most indexes declined on Thursday. The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.88, or 0.22%, to 2665.60. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index shed 2.07, or 0.16%, to 1256.77. Volume was extremely light and breadth was mixed.

Bullish sentiment is running high, expectations that stock prices will rise over the next six months, rose 13.1% to 63.3% in the latest AAII Sentiment Survey. This is the highest level of optimism since November 18, 2004. This is also the 16th
straight week that bullish sentiment has been above its historical average of 39%, the longest such streak since 2004. Bearish sentiment fell -10.7% to 16.4%, below its historical average 30%.

Markets topped last week coincident (?) with the Winter Solstice. They are also overbought, but momentum has NOT turned south. Best guess? Market continues higher into January with the S&P 500 crosses through 1300. If we correct first (my preferred scenario), barring an outlier event or extreme negative volume, it will be a gift for traders to position on the long side. A shakeout is coming, but from what level? If the trend is higher, you will need courage and staying power if you get caught in one of the inevitable mini-tsunamis. One safe strategy is to wait for a tsunami before committing any new capital. I would define a tsunami as a correction of 50 or more points in the S&P 500.

The commodity sectors were the top gainers (XLB +0.26% and XLE +0.28%) as oil rallied and metals finished mixed. Both of these indexes pushed their way to better than two-year highs, the only ones to do so on Thursday.

Meanwhile Financials were the worst sector (XLF -0.72%) after Greek CDS rates widened to record levels and Fitch downgraded Portugal (see currency section below).

--------------------------------------------
DOW TRANSPORTS - ACTION ALERT -

Transportation stocks underperformed again Thursday, a bearish sign for a market that has struggled to rally recently. The Dow Jones Transportation Average fell 19.90 or 0.39% to 5078.92. For the week, the Dow Transports gained 0.55%, less than the Dow Industrials' 0.71% gain and the 1.03% rally in the S&P 500. More important, while the Dow Industrials and S&P 500, along with many other indexes, hit new multi-year highs last week, the Dow Transports failed to do so. Still, they overall target higher as signaled by the IYT (Transports ETF).

--------------------------------------------
GOLD and METALS - ACTION ALERT -

Precious metals traded with little direction and finished mixed as traders headed out early for the holiday weekend and there was little news to move the market. Gold fell 5.50 to 1379.50 but silver rose 0.05 to 29.28. Platinum declined 11 to 1712 but palladium was up 4 to 753. Copper slipped 0.0165 to 4.2585.

With the strength in the Dollar, traders are caught between a rock and a hardplace. will the metals ignore the Dollar and push higher (along with other commodities) or will we see a further shakeout? As in equities, I think we will see both, but the trick will be to 'time' the swings. A sharp sell-off now would in my opinion afford a good opportunity to get long. If we surge to new highs, that would provide a trading exit point ahead of the inevitable shakeout. Long-term players can sit tight, but be prepared for the possibility of a 20% to 25% correction at some point in 2011!

URANIUM - ACTION ALERT

Ux U3O8 Prices* (Uranium)
December 20, 2010 Posting
Spot: $62.50 UP 0.75. Bull market high in the cash market was $138.00.

The December Uranium Futures closed at $62.50. Uranium futures recent his a new bear market low of 40.00. June 13, 2007 hosted the bull market high of 154.95. Major support lies well under the market at $36.00.

The spot price of uranium quadrupled from 2004 to 2007. When it hit $138/lb, uranium became a certified bubble, which has now burst.

--------------------------------------------
BONDS - ACTION ALERT-

Treasuries fell a little on Thursday after the economic news came in largely as expected and the economy slowly but surely recovers. The long bond future lost 11/32 to 120 14/32.

The Treasury Department announced it would sell $99 billion in debt this week. The government will auction $35 billion in 2-year notes on Monday, followed by $35 billion in 5-year debt on Tuesday. A sale of $29 billion in 7-year notes on Wednesday will end the sales in what will be another holiday-shortened week. The amounts are unchanged from last month's sales and in-line with analysts' estimates.

--------------------------------------------
CRUDE OIL - ACTION ALERT -

Oil rose 1.03 to 91.51 and has hit a new two-year high of 91.63 as the US, Europe, and even Australia experienced unseasonably cold weather and the data shows the US economy continues to recover. I am curretly targeting Crude Oil to $94.00 at minimum and possibly $99.00 or higher in the weeks or months ahead.

Natural gas declined 0.069 to 4.083 after the Energy Information Administration reported a weekly drop in natural-gas stockpiles that was slightly deeper than expectations. The EIA said working gas in storage fell 184 billion cubic feet in the week ended Dec. 17. Analysts polled by Platts were expecting a drawdown of between 178 billion and 182 billion cubic feet.

--------------------------------------------
US DOLLAR - ACTION ALERT -

The US Dollar Index fell after China offered to bail out debt-ridden countries in the euro zone. The US Dollar Index lost 0.231 to 80.496.

The Mail Online reports: "China has said it is willing to bail out debt-ridden countries in the euro zone using its $2.7 trillion overseas investment fund. The country has already approached struggling European countries with financial aid, including offering to buy Greece's debt in October and promising to buy $4 billion of Portuguese government debt."

Fitch Ratings on Thursday downgraded Portugal's credit rating to A+ from AA-. The agency also downgraded Portugal's short-term currency rating to F1 from F1+. Fitch cited a slow reduction in Portugal's deficit and a tougher financing environment as reasons for the downgrade.

The Greek government is considering a plan to restructure its debt after 2013 when a current loan agreement with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund expires. The report in the daily Ta Nea newspaper, which didn't cite sources, said the government wouldn't seek a discount on the face value of existing bonds nor any kind of restructuring before 2013. The report, however, indicates that a renegotiation of interest payments on existing Greek bonds held by private investors is being weighed for the first time. The report helped push spreads on Greek credit default swaps to record wide levels.

Ireland's High Court on Thursday granted a request allowing the Finance Ministry to inject ?3.7 billion into struggling Allied Irish Banks PLC (AIB -17.3%). "The order allows the Minister to provide capital so as to ensure AIB meets its year-end capital requirement as set by the Central Bank. This capital is essential to allow AIB to fulfill its role in supporting the Irish economy," said the Finance Ministry in a statement. The government of Ireland will now own 92.8% of AIB from the cash injection which will come from the government's National Pension Reserve Fund. The Irish High Court has ordered AIB to cancel its listing of ordinary shares on the main securities market of the Irish Stock Exchange and apply for listing on the Enterprise Securities Market of the Irish Stock Exchange. AIB has been ordered to also cancel trading on the main market of the London Stock Exchange.

The Euro rose 0.11% against the Dollar.

The Dollar has experienced a nice rally and didn't quite make it to the 200 day moving average (at8 2.00). Above that level, however, a more sustainable rally will likely ensue next to 84.00 and possibly 89.00. Regardless, I remain a long-term bear.

--------------------------------------------
ECONOMIC NEWS:

The number of U.S. workers filing new applications for jobless benefits fell slightly last week to 420,000, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Economists had expected initial claims in the week of Dec. 18 to total about 421,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. The prior week's number was revised up by 2,000 to 423,000. The four-week average of new claims rose 2,500 to 426,000. The moving average is considered a more accurate barometer of employment trends because it smoothens out quirks in the weekly data. In the week of Dec. 11, meanwhile, the number of people who continued to receive benefits under state unemployment programs dropped 103,000 to a seasonally adjusted 4.06 million. Altogether, 8.88 million people received some kind of state or federal benefits in the week of Dec. 4, on an unadjusted basis. That was down 308,338 from the prior week.

Orders for U.S.-made durable goods declined 1.3% in November, led down by transportation-equipment orders, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Economists had expected a decline of 0.5%. Excluding transportation, new orders rose 2.4%. Core durable-goods orders, which are orders for capital goods excluding defense and aircraft, rose 2.6% in November after a 3.6% decline in October. Shipments of durable goods fell 0.3% in November, while inventories rose 0.6%. Durable-goods orders in October were revised to a decline of 3.1% from a prior estimate of a 3.4% drop. Durable goods are expensive items designed to last three years or longer, and while the data is volatile from month to month, analysts see a trend in orders as a valuable leading economic indicator.

Year-over-year core inflation remained at 0.8% in November, matching the record low reached in the prior month, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. The data go back to 1960. The core personal consumption expenditure price index excludes food and energy. This core gauge of inflation rose 0.1% in November, as expected by economists. The overall inflation gauge rose 0.1% in November, after a 0.2% gain in October. This overall inflation is up 1% in the past year, the lowest since October of 2009. The government's inflation gauges are broad based, and consumers may be more sensitive to price changes of particular items that are frequently purchased, such as gasoline.

The Commerce Department reported that personal incomes rose 0.3% in November, compared with 0.2% expected by economists. Spending gained 0.4%, while Wall Street had expected a gain of 0.5%. Real disposable incomes rose 0.2% in November.

A gauge of U.S. consumer sentiment rose to 74.5 in late December from 71.6 in November, according to media reports on Thursday of the Reuters/University of Michigan index. The December reading matched expectations of economists. Despite the gain in December, the gauge is below pre-recession levels of more than 80. While there have been some signs of improvement in the economy, consumers remain concerned about jobs.

Sales of new single-family homes climbed 5.5% in November, a government report said Thursday, as the housing market continues to show stability at weak levels. The Commerce Department said new-home sales rose to a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of 290,000, from a downwardly revised 275,000 in October. The sales level missed economists estimate of 295,000, and the initial government report said October sales were 283,000. The pace of sales is 21.2% below that of November 2009. The median sales price of new houses sold in November was $213,000, up 8% on October but 2.6% below year-earlier levels.

CORPORATE NEWS:

Micron Technology reported a sharp jump in revenue for the first fiscal quarter, though sales for the period came in below Wall Street's estimates. For the quarter ended Dec. 2, Micron reported earnings of $155 million, or 15 cents a share, compared to earnings of $204 million, or 23 cents a share, for the same period the previous year. Revenue grew 29% to $2.3 billion. Analysts were expecting earnings of 29 cents a share on revenue of $2.38 billion. MU fell 4.11%.

Bed Bath & Beyond reported a fiscal third-quarter profit of $188.6 million, or 74 cents a share, up from $151.3 million, or 58 cents a share, a year ago. Sales rose 11.1% to $2.19 billion. Analysts were looking for earnings of 66 cents a share on revenue of $2.1 billion. The company said it expects to post a profit of $2.86 to $2.90 a share for the full year. Wall Street previously forecast earnings of $2.82 a share. Bed Bath & Beyond also said its board of directors authorized a new $2 billion share repurchase program, which is set to start in early fiscal 2011. BBBY rose 5.10%.

Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. said that it will pay 16 Australian dollars a share for Riversdale Mining Ltd., valuing the firm at A$3.9 billion ($3.9 billion). Rio Tinto has made pre-bid agreements in relation to 14.9% of Riversdale's shares. It said that the deal will provide it with a substantial coking-coal development pipeline in the emerging Moatize Basin in Mozambique. RIO slipped 0.82%.

Jo-Ann Stores will be acquired by an affiliate of private-equity firm Leonard Green & Partners LP for about $1.6 billion, or $61 a share, in cash. Jo-Ann's board has approved the deal and is recommending that shareholders adopt the agreement. The acquisition is expected to close in the first half of calendar 2011, subject to customary closing conditions. Under terms of the agreement, the retailer's board will also be allowed to solicit other proposals through Feb. 14. JAS rallied 31.91%.

Harry Schultz Retires With a Bang: Warns of Hyperinflation; Says World War 3 is Over

The dean of investment newsletter writers, Harry Schultz, age 87, has announced that he is retiring at end of the year and closing down his letter, The International Harry Schultz Letter.

Schultz has always been an original--way ahead of the pack. Decades before anyone ever heard of Twitter, Schultz wrote his newsletter with an abbreviated spelling and he told us all that it would be the wave of the future. He used "u" for you and "c" for see, among many other abbreviations. Decades ago! Huh, I though he was off on that one.

He was also one of the original promoters of the multiple-flag life style: Live in one country, work in another, be a citizen of a third.

Here are the forecasts that Schultz is making as he prepares to ride off into the sunset, wherever that maybe: Schultz specializes in big ideas. Currently, he is fascinated by the possibility that hyperinflation might be triggered quickly, by a sort of global financial traffic accident...Schultz describes this scenario as "a genuine risk" and comments:

"Hyperinflation can be triggered in several other ways. Trust failure is the controlling element, which triggers Fearlation, for example, a Comex gold delivery default or a major Too-Big-To-Fail bank failure or a self-propelling domino bank-run are all possible triggers. A bond market implosion will result from any of the above, even if it isn't itself the trigger."

Schultz believes in active trading and his recommendations are often dauntingly complex and conditional. He seems to be expecting gold to stall, temporarily, writing "Wait to re-buy strength after a dip that clearly holds 1200.00-1182.00."

Although he recommends only an 8%-10% exposure to non-gold stocks, he allows for "a potentially fiery rally leg --which would hint today's deflationary forces may succumb "directly" to future (high-speed) inflation. i.e., the resulting debasement of the dollar could manifest itself via a rising "nominal" value of the stock market."...

Schultz also recommends an asset allocation of 30-45% gold stocks; bullion; 20-30% notes/bills/bonds in diversified denominations; 20-25% commodities; 1-5% cash in hand ("stored privately"); 0-5% bear stock market protection in a variety of 200% inverse Exchange Traded Funds like ProShares UltraShort Dow30...

Schultz may be worried about his health but he has not lost his knack for eccentric, possibly prescient, edginess.

He leads his current issue:

"I'm happy to announce the end of World War III. The Iran war, which triggered World War Three, planned by the Pentagon and Mossad, has ended, actually before they began. It's a first in history!

"How do I know this? Follow the money, not the propaganda. Four US banks are to open branches in Iran!...Citibank and Goldman Sachs are among the first applicants! Since Goldman Sachs is the alternate, or behind the scenes US government, as we all know, that name/news assured me of the good news."
