This is a bit tongue-in-cheek of course, but its the time of the year when predictions start rolling off people's tongues more often than wished of Merry Xmas. What does come to mind is that this year has been none stop doom, dire, and gloom on just about every front: weather, hurricanes, earthquakes (supposedly more than usual), Tsunami's, and of course Fukishima Nuclear incident. Then on the financial front all's we've heard about is Euro zone failing, too much debt, US deficits going through the roof, failure by leadership, and of course tea partiers and OWS. Then there are the on-going saga's of unemployment, foreclosures, homeless, 46 million on food stamps, erosion of living standards, and all around backlash against all things corporate, CEO, or finance related. Ponzi schemes, or simply too much violence, it seems we've had it all this year. So does one say "this is all priced into the market" and as a contrarian play, plan for a 2012 where the SNP could go to 1700 + ? Could make that claim knowing that QE3 is going to be multiples of all prior QE's combined. Or does one say "things are only getting worse, so batten down the hatches ?" Or does one take a more wimpy approach, and say " I follow what the market tells me, and price is king, so no predictions are necessary" ? Or you could pull a Mauldin, and say we"ll "muddle through again." Personally, I'm tired of all the same mutant variations of the same predictions, many of which can be justified a hundred different ways. Using TA, using fundamentals, using anecdotes, or combinations thereof. So without further ado, here is my boldest prediction ever: By this time next year, 1. The US will simply be further in debt, with no real solutions on the table. 2. ******* willing we will all still be here and posting on this board. 3. The EU will also be further in debt, with no real solutions on the table. 4. Many of the characters we see today, will actually be gone by then. (Merkel, Sarkozy, Obama, etc etc.) 5. A new cast of characters will be on the world stage, and nothing will have largely changed. 6. The Dow, S&P, and Nazdog, wont have gotten out of any significant trading range. Not more than 10% up from where we are at today, and not more than 10% down. 7. And the boldest part of this prediction, is that none of what I put above absolutely matters, none of it is bold, and even if it were, and I got it right, it still doesn't amount to a hill of beans. Making predictions are simply a way for each of us, to perhaps make some sense of this crazy world, or even peaceful world, depending upon on one views it. And also a way for each of us to perhaps gain a sense of control, over largely what is the uncontrollable. If this year taught us anything, is that the unexpected can happen, it can be quite scary, and it can easily become yesterday's news, not relevant to today, or even tomorrow. And the boldest thing I can do, is live in the present, today, and each day, and try to live it as if it might be my last. In many small ways, I have done that this year, and have accomplished things, I never envisioned accomplishing. It's not necessarily about living free of fear, or going out and spending all my money, cause I wouldn't get to enjoy if the next day I passed. It's mostly about appreciating what each day gave me, keeping things to their simplest terms possible, enjoying it if possible, feeling the emotion of it, if its not so enjoyable, and learning to just be a human that is full of potential, and harnessing it the best way possible.
