Deaths from brain-eating amoeba linked to cold remedy...
Posted Image
Louisiana's state health department issued a warning about neti pots - which look like mini watering cans, that are used by pouring salty water through one nostril.
It follows two recent deaths - a 51-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man from the 'brain-eating amoeba' Naegleria fowleri.
It is thought the amoeba entered their brains when they used the devices.
Both victims are thought to have used tap water, instead of distilled or sterilised water as recommended by the manufacturers

interesting, RD. thanks, I have a hiking buddy who uses this daily and I will ask him if he uses sterilized water. he is so well-read and a smart fellow, we call him "Roger says", and suggest he should have a column in the local paper. LOL

I do have hazy memories of being abducted by a space ship and of being cloned.
I thought it was just a bad dream. But maybe...

I recently met a lady who swears by her neti-pot's effectiveness in preventing sinus allergy problems.
And I recently saw one in a doctor's home.
So I have been considering trying one, they look like so much fun.
I do sometimes use a saline nasal mist which I got from the drug store.

I would imagine that death by neti-pot is pretty rare, unless this is the first time the cause has been considered.
This sounds like an episode for House.
We had a couple of local boys die a few years ago from the same micro-organism.
They picked it up by swimming in untreated (non-chlorinated) water.
Obviously drowning poses more risk than "brain-eating amoebas."

But maybe people will think twice about what they put in their nose, especially poisonous snakes!
