Is that a lot ?

YTD more than 200 shot dead.

Last year at this time it was 134 YTD.

In years past, we've seen more than 600 die as a result of shootings in Chicago.

Is it getting worse ? I don't know, but its truly not getting better. More cops, more camera's, more money spent hasn't put a dent in the violent crime. There is qualitative evidence of more drugs and guns on the streets.

What I do know is that the economy isn't getting better for the populace that tends to commit these crimes, and more and more people are scrounging to create an existence.

I live in the suburbs surrounding Chicago, and while violent crimes haven't gotten worse, there are quite a few more thefts, break ins, and obvious signs that more people are stealing to make ends meet.

When you see evidence of what's happening in Europe, yet fail to pay much attention to similar things going on in our own backyard's, it makes one wonder if the media isn't intentionally beefing up and magnifying coverage of news events worldwide, so that our own problems get minimized, or become less apparent. Much of this type of news is barely news anymore, so it gets buried on the back pages, or occasionally mentioned, like now, when we see 10 shot dead on a holiday weekend.

This isn't a wall of worry we are climbing. This is a dangerous slippery slope toward the depths of depravity, and scarcity of affordable resources, and worsening living standards occurring world wide at a pace that is not relenting. Everything we need is becoming immensely less affordable, and while wages are being suppressed, our currency is being debased as well.

The bulk of our media is wholly dishonest. Its a shame, because that is what people are paying attention to, and its at best delusional, at worst, a disaster unfolding while we literally take zero steps at all levels of government to address any of the problems. Every government is in the same mode: denial, and delay.

Years ago a TV news editor told me that 100 killed in India = 10 in Europe = 1 in NYC.

The major network news organizations' research is predominately the reading of others' work - newspapers, news wires, magazines. The NYT, LA Times & Washington Post have a disproportional influence.

Journalism is not a profession like others - there is no requirement for a degree, passing a test, specialization in a particular subject, on going education. It is hindsight, not foresight.
