Morning Joe started the week with a segment about the “mind-boggling” IRS scandal, regarding the agency’s admitting to targeting politically conservative groups. The roundtable was unanimously outraged, with references to Richard Nixon and Willie Geist even stating it’s “tyranny.”

“Do these people not remember the Nixon administration?” Lisa Myers asked. “One of the abuses of power was his use of the IRS against his political enemies.”

JON KARL: That's right, George. I've obtained a soon-to-be released investigative report that shows the IRS started targeting Tea Party groups more than three years ago. And that among the criteria they used was to target groups that were critical of the way the country is being run. Despite publicly claiming otherwise, the new report obtained by ABC News, shows the IRS began targeting conservative groups as far back as 2010 and that senior IRS officials have known about if or two years. The IRS recently acknowledged targeting groups with Tea Party or patriot in their names. This morning, ABC has learned the new report goes further. A draft of that document prepared by the IRS's internal watchdog says that the IRS was also tracking groups whose goals include, quote, "limiting government" and "educating on the Constitution or Bill of Rights" and even groups that, quote, "criticize how the country is being run. On Friday, the White House said it had no idea that the IRS was targeting Tea Party groups.

Would the White House had an idea that the IRS was targeting groups that supported the president? Tea party and similar groups probably didn't have a voice with the WH - to voice their issues with the IRS.

Next to come out will be wide spread leaking of financial information by the IRS to re-election and campaign groups, baseless IRS audits of contributors/bundlers etc. -- all of which are felonies as is the above targeting.

ALSO --

IRS demanded 'names of the donors, contributors, and grantors' and insisted: 'Please identify your volunteers'
Tax collectors began in 2012 to scrutinize conservative nonprofits more closely than others
Documents show senior IRS officials in Washington knew of the practice as early as August 2011, but the WH says found out when press reports came out.

ALL of this is clearly illegal -- especially after laws passed post Nixon.

BTW -- They also targeted Jewish and pro-Israel groups

GOVT TAPS PRESS PHONE RECORDS FOR MONTHS
May 13, 6:38 PM (ET)
By MARK SHERMAN
WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department secretly obtained two months of telephone records of reporters and editors for The Associated Press in what the news cooperative's top executive called a "massive and unprecedented intrusion" into how news organizations gather the news.

DOJ tracked 20 phone lines at AP...

Swept up entire collection of records...

Assume all your communications are being monitored...

PS: I like the government. I just want more of it.

Bill Clinton's IRS audited Paula Jones

When Clinton accuser Paula Jones was audited in 1997, Clinton’s press secretary Mike McCurry denied White House involvement.

We now know, of course, that you don’t need direct White House involvement to politicize the IRS. The underlings know what to do!

According to a Judicial Watch filing, the Clinton enemies audited included

Clinton paramours Gennifer Flowers and Liz Ward Gracen, sexual assault accusers Paula Jones and Juanita Broaddrick, and fired White House Travel Office Director Billy Dale.

as well as these organizations:

The National Rifle Association, The Heritage Foundation, The National Review, The American Spectator, Freedom Alliance, National Center for Public Policy Research, American Policy Center, American Cause, Citizens Against Government Waste, Citizens for Honest Government, Progress and Freedom Foundation, Concerned Women for America and the San Diego Chapter of Christian Coalition.

From the IRS to the NSA, Americans have reasons not to trust the Obama Administration.

At a tax symposium at Pepperdine Law School last week, former IRS chief counsel Donald Korb was asked, "On a scale of 1-10 ... how damaging is the current IRS scandal
His answer: 9.5. Other tax experts on the panel called it "awful," and said that it has done "tremendous damage

As Kimberley Strassel reports in the Wall Street Journal, Obama's negotiating strategy on the omnibus spending bill that just passed revolved around using the IRS to keep Tea Party groups silenced:

Meanwhile, the person chosen to "investigate" the IRS's targeting of Tea Party groups in 2010-2012 is Barbara Bosserman, a long-time Obama campaign donor." So the IRS's credibility is in no danger of being rebuilt any time soon.

Two organizations, and two courageous judges, are beginning to peel back layer after layer from the fetid onion of corruption that is the scandal of the IRS’s “lost” emails.

The obvious conclusion: “They were incriminating, and show White House involvement. So they were ‘lost."

I am just re-reading bits of David Fromkin’s classic "Europe’s Last Summer: Who Started the Great War in 1914?" In a chapter called “Shredding the Evidence,” Fromkin details how the French and Germans both did their best to muddy the historical record, and thereby escape blame for the catastrophe of the war, by concealing, destroying, or falsifying incriminating documents.
