I am a member of several Linkedin groups on trading. One Group Trader, Trading & Risk Psychology gets some pretty interesting discussions going. One such on going discussion resulted from the question; Can you be taught to trade? Whether or not you agree here is a response I thought highly of, from Mercedes Oestermann van Essen She is a Trading and Investment Psychology Coach,Trader, Author in the U.K.

Of course, you can’t be taught to trade successfully. Trading is first and foremost an inside job and has everything to do with the beliefs you hold about yourself and the world, and only very little with your trading system. Hence most people who follow courses, read books on how to trade fail. They are just attempting to copy the belief template of another trader.

If I told a professional institutional trader how I trade they would cringe, I should know, I live with one who for years tried to show me how to trade as a respectable professional trader. Whenever I follow in those footsteps I lose. Why? Because I am not true to my own authentic self and in trading someone else's system I lose touch with myself and lose the feel for the market.

It took me many years to appreciate just how important the attainment of self knowledge is, and then developing the confidence to act on this knowledge. As a trading coach this is the single one thing I can teach other traders.

Trading actually is not that complicated, unless of course one wants to make it complicated, if that works for you, fine, it can be great intellectual fun. There are only a few absolute rules which one must follow come what may, the first rule is understanding risk and managing risk. The second know thyself better than you think is possible. Beyond that the world is your oyster.

The trouble is this, new traders and many long established traders are so invested into the collective trading culture that they have lost their authentic selves in the collective world view. This way of operating used to work up to a point, however, as we are going through a major shift of magnificent proportions in all areas of life, the shift is a cosmic shift; these old ways of operating are falling apart.

It is all about recognizing and initiating one’s unique, authentic characteristics within the framework of the collective. Understand that and learn to trade from a point of view that trading is one of the many tools you can choose to learn about yourself and the universe. Private trader, institutional trader, experienced or not so experienced trader the same applies.

Hope You Enjoyed and Good Trading

Truly great post. In my experience that absolutely says it all.

"If you've heard this story before, don't stop me because I'd like to hear it again," Groucho Marx (on market history?).

“I've learned in options trading simple is best and the obvious is often the most elusive to recognize.”

"The god of trading rewards persistence, experience and discipline, and absolutely nothing else."

I cant be taught - but the turtles group seems to have set that question to rest a long time ago - answering yes. I think no one can be taught to discretionary trade but to trade according to rules, yes.
best,
