Ice storms in Austin, planning my February escape to the sea and surf. Any comments about Acapulco? Do you have a nice condo I can rent? Cheers, Cookie

My escape during the winter is to St Martin (the French side) or St Lucia islands. Playa Del Sol in Mexico is my favorite for a Mexican getaway. They have some of the prettiest beaches I have ever visited. Any of these three are nicer (imo) than Acapulco ( way too much crime and pollution).

count my vote for Puerto Vallarta, though I haven't been there in many years. Pretty as heck. M

Thanks for comments. I've been to St. Martins ... beautiful. I also lived in Barbados for a year (Christ Church ... got island fever (restlessness) pretty darn fast .... okay for vacation, not to live ... however, there are some nice parts to the island. Mark - Also considered Puerto Vallarta as I've heard it's nice. One reason Acapulco looked appealing was the SHORT flight from Austin (total travel time about 4 hours, compared to MUCH longer for every other place I looked at). Was interested in Cancun and Bahamas, but the temperatures just not hot enough for this swim fan. I may not like Acapulco .... but will make the best of it and temperatures more to my liking (mid 80's) ... so that's where I'm headed ... and it will beat Austin's current freeze. How I spent 23 years in Canada, I'll never know ... that's NOT living!! Will look into playa Del Sol and maybe Puerto Vallarta for next year :) Cheers all and happy trading. Cookie

I second Mark's opinion of Puerto Vallarta...I've ALWAYS had a good time there. Used to stay at the Oceana near the beach -- don't know if it's still open. Take the ferry to Yalapa and spend the night over there if you want to get away from crowds. It's a remote fishing village not too far down the coast. My favorite place is Zihuatenejo. We liked Hotel Irma on the beach. "Zee-what" has few American tourists and I like that -- they're all down the beach at Ixtapa, nice place, but tourism central. Have a great time, Calmcookie!
