Interesting article about not trying to manipulate climate change ... and the possibility of "Dangerous Global Cooling." Info from Professor at Carlton University (kooky Canadians ... maybe not? :P )

I don't know enough about this topic ... other than to say that the Al Gore massive Ice melt downs certainly look bad.

Thanks, I've added that link to my collection of those who don't support the present hype.

NOW PREPARE FOR 'DANGEROUS GLOBAL COOLING'

Read the sunspots
June 20, 2007
Forget warming, beware the new ice age

Solar scientists predict that, by 2020, the sun will be starting into its weakest Schwabe solar cycle of the past two centuries, likely leading to unusually cool conditions on Earth. Beginning to plan for adaptation to such a cool period, one which may continue well beyond one 11-year cycle, as did the Little Ice Age, should be a priority for governments. It is global cooling, not warming, that is the major climate threat to the world, especially Canada. As a country at the northern limit to agriculture in the world, it would take very little cooling to destroy much of our food crops, while a warming would only require that we adopt farming techniques practiced to the south of us.

PS: Did you know:
"In September, 1979, President Jimmy Carter signed the National Climate Program Act into law, in aid of predicting future climate and combating global cooling."

I prefer the cooling scenario ... then we Texans wouldn't have to hide out at Barton Springs all summer ... then again, let it stay hot. I'll just become a Barton tadpole :D :P :D

Aside from solar cycles, consider Global Dimming, the fraternal twin of Global Warming, as a factor which makes all this alarmingly unpredictable. Greenhouse gases are responsible for the warming. Particulates (ash and such) are responsible for the dimming.

If you're unfamiliar with Global Dimming, think of the effect of a major volcanic erruption...lots of particulates...temperature drops a few degrees. This confounds the discussion of Global Warming which, I believe to be a real problem, and (by chance) has offset the effects of warming over several decades.

Two problems loom. 1) Much effort is expended to reduce particulate pollution. The particulates are a health issue, so it is a concern, but concentrating on reducing only this type of pollution can enhance warming. Most effort needs to be focused on reducing greenhouse gas. 2) The tipping point for warming is likely to be nonlinear, and thus chaotic. If it is crossed, we likely will not be able to control it.

Global Warming and Global Dimming are related issues. They are highly correlated, like Oil and Energy in the equity and commodity markets. They generally go in the same direction, but with careful management, the moves can be separated. Alternative approaches are needed for successful control.

If you use internet search, include Global Dimming as a parameter. Alton :sweatingbullets: 6/22/07
