Mark,

I have been fishing the same spot near our house nearly every dawn and dusk for a few weeks now.

Lately, the larger fish are taking my fly and a piece of tippet every outing.

Tuesday night, I lost my favorite no. 14 parachute adams. I have been thinking about that ever since, and tonight I solved this situation in a non-purist manner. I tied 6 lb. monofilament only as my 8 foot leader. Those larger fish all made it to shore for my viewing tonight!

I want to try one of these patterns in a few weeks -

Fishing out here is quite different, but I use a braided leader and then tie on 6 lb test when I'm fishing big poppers for bass, or when I'm sight casting to big (like 30") carp. Frankly, too much, sometimes, is made of the "delicate presentation". When the hawgs are biting, they don't seem to care much either way. I've seen worm dunkers with bare hooks and Zebco's catch trout when they're in the mood. It's best that we not take our "purity" too seriously. Good for you on the fish. You'll get no guff from me. Me? I was furring in walls in our "attic" in 90' heat and rebuilding part of a chimney. (actually 92' was last week. We were only in the 80's yesterday, but 90's sounds more pathetic). My "big" :( fishing plan is to drag Mrs. Chaos out to the warm water discharge on the Ohio around Thanksgiving to catch "wipers" (striped bass hybrids) on the fly. I hear it's an absolute hoot. M

striped bass hybrids sounds like a fun fish! see you here after August 5th when I return from the Wilderness backpacking/fishing trip. hope to have some photos of the lakes and surrounding peaks to share. I am glad I have been hiking steep hills nearly every day since February...my conditioning is now optimal for this high alpine trip. good times to you while I am away. fyi, your heat is not here..it is 63 out this a.m. and a big rain cloud above. highs this summer in my region are generally below 80 so far. am now headed out late today for a little casting and playing with the trout.

At 2.3 million acres (9,300 kmē), it is the largest contiguous area of protected wilderness in the continental United States.

Sounds like a great wilderness spot. We're just back from nearly 2 weeks in Baxter, in the north woods of Maine. Total seclusion, good fishing, and great mountain climbing. The view from Katahdin was perfect, the trails steep and the moose were friendly. Pictures if/when I get a chance. mm

I caught one on the way home tonight. My "secret" pond. 100 feet west of US 169, 1/2 mile north of the dragstrip and 1/4 south of the F-16 Falcons and Hueys from the Okla. Air National guard and 1 mile from the airport. It's always so peaceful when you're fishing!
