I find the past can be prologue. But it can also cause accidents if you are only looking behind you.
Anyway, I find Mike Burk's seasonal charts of interest.
I pasted together his monthly election year charts and it seems to indicate that since we are still above the January 2nd open, we are about average, excluding 2008, with possibly more upside ahead.
The first set are prior to 2008, the second set below include 2008.
The 2012 graph obviously has a different amplitude, but shows the similar direction.

That strikes me as a little like suggesting to a trader that if his feet are in the deep freeze and his head is in the oven, on average he should feel pretty comfortable....
