WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has signed a proclamation declaring swine flu a national emergency, the White House said Saturday. "In keeping with the administration's proactive approach to H1N1 Flu, President Obama last night signed a proclamation declaring 2009-H1N1 Influenza a national emergency," it said in a statement. "The proclamation enhances the ability of our nation's medical treatment facilities to handle a surge in H1N1 patients by allowing, as needed, the waiver of certain standard federal requirements on a case-by-case basis." On Friday, federal health officials said more Americans have been vaccinated against seasonal flu this fall than ever before by this time of year. Published 10:35 am Central Time.

This has been an unusual year for vaccination. Due to the worry about H1N1 I've had patients who swore on their mother's graves that they would NEVER get a flu shot and came in begging for shots. We ran out in less than 2 weeks and was unable to get a second batch, (we use one of the largest, if not the largest, distributors out of NY). Local flu clinics - at nursing homes and grade schools - had to cancel or cut back due to vaccine shortages. Meanwhile in Maine last week we got 35,000 doses of H1N1 vaccine delivered to the state, (out of the 700,000 we were expecting). These will be controlled and distributed to pregnant women first, younger kids, etc. (you can read the cdc.gov link for details). I'm seeing a big pick up in flu like illness already. Fevers, aches and pains +/ cough and snot. So far among the healthy, active mid range group ( 25 to 55 year olds). I may get like an airline stewardess today and just hold up a big sign and use props: Drink fluids. Wash hands. Use NO over the counter remedies". Avoid alcohol. Want my recipe for chicken soup? Be patient. This will take the stuffing out of you for a few weeks. No, antibiotics don't work for viruses. Use acetaminophen for fever, aches and pains. Try to rest and let your body fight the virus. Vitamin C, zinc, ecchinacea have been shown in excellent clinical medical trials to be worthless (other than occasional placebo benefit). Wanna guess how many times I've got to say that per day in the next few months? Want to know how to not catch a virus? Watch Bubble Boy. mm

Junk Science Returns to the White House

You're probably aware that the H1N1 swine flu vaccine supply has fallen dangerously short of the level required to protect the most vulnerable among us. In the spring Federal officials predicted that as many as 120 million doses would be available by now, as opposed to the 16 million doses that actually arrived. Flu vaccine is tricky to make under the best of circumstances, but there are scientifically safe and proven ways to stretch supplies. Are you aware that the Federal Government refuses to allow the use of adjuvants that can be used to produce twice as many doses from the same vaccine stock? This despite the fact that over 40 million doses of flu vaccine containing adjuvants have been dispensed in Europe over the past dozen years without any indication of a safety issue. Some people denied shots because of this decision are going to die. Does this policy sound scientific or political?

You're probably aware that a mercury-containing preservative called thimerosal was removed from children's vaccines in 2001 to mollify activists promoting the theory that thimerosal causes autism. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there was then and is still now no scientific evidence linking thimerosal to autism. Despite numerous peer-reviewed studies as well as the empirical fact that autism rates have not plunged since the 2001 thimerosal ban, as one would expect if the preservative were a leading cause of this heart breaking illness, the administration recently made a decision that further reduced the supply of H1N1 vaccine. It switched our country's emergency H1N1 vaccine order from multi-dose to single-dose vials, causing production chain backups as vendors scrambled to accommodate the last-minute switch. Why the change? Because single-dose vials contain a lower concentration of thimerosal. Some people denied shots because of this decision are going to die. Does this policy sound scientific or political?

President Obama declares H1N1 flu a national emergency

By Michael D. Shear and Rob Stein

Saturday, October 24, 2009; 12:58 PM

President Obama Saturday declared the H1N1 flu a national emergency, clearing the way for legal waivers to allow hospitals and doctors offices to better handle a surge of new patients.

The proclamation will grant Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius the power to authorize the waivers as individual medical facilities request them, officials said.

It says that Obama does "hereby find and proclaim that, given that the rapid increase in illness across the Nation may overburden health care resources and that the temporary waiver of certain standard Federal requirements may be warranted in order to enable U.S. health care facilities to implement emergency operations plans, the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic in the United States constitutes a national emergency."

The H1N1 “pandemic” has reportedly killed approximately 1,000 people in the United States.

Swine flu: "considerably less lethal" than feared

Twenty-six people have died for every 100,000 cases in England, an analysis of deaths to November 8 revealed.

About 1per cent of the population in England has had swine flu with symptoms, of which 0.026 per cent died, the research added.

Sir Liam Donaldson, the Government's chief medical officer for England, led the study, published online in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), which described the low death rates as "fortunate".

His study concluded: "The first influenza pandemic of the 21st century is considerably less lethal than was feared in advance."

Sir Liam wrote, however, that a lower impact than feared was not justification for "inaction".

Sir Liam compares the pandemic with previous ones, saying "improvements in nutritional status, housing and health care availability might explain some of the apparent decrease in case fatality from one pandemic to the next".

Around here, we are still burying people from the bird flu. They didn't die from the flu but from the stress caused by worrying about it. <_< Did you read about the political operative who received $6 million in stimulus money to put all of those ads on TV about the switch to digital TV? He claimed to have created (or saved) 3 jobs with my $6 million. Just think of all of the payola going to these yearly Flu Panics. I can't wait until politicians run all of health care. It's not cynicism when it's true.

Small minds, wrong conclusions. You can follow the facts here CDC
or you can make silly statements or, like MSS above, blame Obama.

Truth is we are in a significant pandemic. If your parent or kid had or has died from H1N1 and could have gotten a flu vaccine and didn't that would be tragic. President Obama was completely correct in raising the alert. The "right" has their heads so far up their butts they'd rather not listen to him and die, than pay attention. Darwinian, I guess.

We are seeing a small slow down in cases this past week. Could be a pause, could be due to smart state by state preparedness, isolation and proper distribution of vaccine to high risk cases. Tons of elementary kids have gotten the vaccine at school in the past few weeks. That may have helped.

I expect a rise in cases after or during the upcoming holiday travel season.

Proud to be a member of the scientific community who puts reason over nonsense and actually takes care of people.

I find it very odd, MM, that as one of a handful of folks in a position to actually share facts and data on the H1N1 virus, you've chosen to insult one poster and smear the right instead of furthering knowledge. What about your post furthers knowledge? Can you blame ANYONE for being cynical about this "pandemic" that has killed fewer people in the US than prom night (as of 10/24/09)? Is that consistent with a national emergency? According to the CDC 36k die from the "common" flu each year. 1/4 that number have died from H1N1 this year so far. Attempts to subjectivize this issue aren't likely to work with crew. None of this means that you shouldn't be concerned nor that you shouldn't be encouraging at-risk folks to get vaccinated (nor does it necessarily mean you should be doing the latter). But disrespecting a cynical eye being cast toward our government? Any hard evidence to support inducing panic and expanding Federal reach and power? M
