WEEKEND: 'Supermoon' Rises...

Tomorrow's supermoon, which will be bigger and brighter than most other full moons this year, will be the first of three such moons in consecutive months. The next supermoons will occur on Aug. 10 and Sept. 9, according to NASA.
At this point, known as "perigee," the moon is about 30,000 miles (50,000 kilometers) closer to the planet than at its farthest point, or "apogee."
Tomorrow and Sept. 9, the moon will be full on the same day as perigee, and on Aug. 10, it will be full during the same hour as perigee, making it especially bright.

It looks like we escaped any significant damage.

Japan had a 6.8 in the same area which caused the deadly Tsunami.
Here in Okie land we had 11 small ones over the weekend, several occurred at the same time as some California quakes.
Today near sun-up, we had a mag 3 & 4.

From Saturday evening to Sunday morning in a 14-hour stretch, the US Geological Survey recorded a total of seven small quakes ranging from magnitude 2.6 to 2.9 in northeast Oklahoma. The Sunday quakes were centered in the Guthrie, Jones and Langston areas, 15 miles to 30 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. According to the USGS, the Oklahoma earthquakes today were recorded between 7:57 p.m. Saturday and 9:51 a.m. Sunday.

Well the super-moons didn't kill us all.
There were a few 6 magnitudes today and several hundred died in China just prior to the July 12 full moon.

The early November full moon has 'em quaking in Nevada:

The temblors have been growing steadily stronger with time. Six earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or greater have struck the area since Tuesday and about 40 have struck in the last 24 hours, Madin said.

"This week it has just gone crazy," Madin said.

The swarm is beneath an uninhabited part of the Nevada desert near the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, but officials are telling the public, especially the almost 2,300 residents of Lakeview, to develop earthquake plans if they haven't already.

"If you are not ready for an earthquake, now is an awfully good time to get ready for an earthquake," said Alison Ryan, a spokeswoman for the department.

Scientists believe groundwater is slowly percolating along the faults and building up pressure, making movement on the faults much easier, said John Vidale, director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington.

"It doesn't necessarily mean anything big is coming, but it does raise the risk there will be a bigger quake in the future," he said. "Ninety-nine percent of the time nothing too dramatic happens, but every now and then there is a good pop and everyone asks why we didn't predict it."

Helicopter surveys on Sunday showed more extensive damage than earlier thought from an overnight earthquake in the mountainous central Japan area that hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics.
At least 37 homes were destroyed in two villages, and 39 people were injured across the region, including seven seriously, mostly with broken bones, officials said.

Sichuan was struck by a magnitude-7.9 quake in May 2008 that left nearly 90,000 people dead, many of them in collapsed schools and other poorly constructed buildings.
Construction standards have been significantly tightened since then, and the country's disaster response capacity has improved with better equipment and trained rescue teams.
NOTE: The May 12, 2008 quake was neither a full or new moon and was mid-day.
They can happen anytime of course, but the gravitational pull is most extreme during the full/new moon, and especially the "Super Moons" when the moon is the closest to the earth.
