In a Bear Market, buyers only want "quality" and liquidity. They don't want nasty surprises and they want to be able to get out quickly if they feel the need.
Now, eventually, nobody is going to have any interest at all in the Rut and Midcap stocks. Those will be the buy of the decade, eventually.

in 2001-2003 the dow lost less on the whole, but the shape of that correction is the same as that of spx
