Gary,
One of the greatest things I did for myself was to keep track of my spending and preparing a budget for retirement. I don't have any debt - the house is paid for in full - I'm single My budget is basically as follows:
$20,000 - Basic living expenses - food, clothing, insurance, house costs, gas, minor entertainment etc.
$20,000 - Discretionary spending - travel, education, hobbies etc.
$ 5,000 - amortized expenses - car replacement, appliance replacement, other repairs etc.
$45,000 total - I could spend more and I might very well spend more than this and still have money at my death. I'm being conservative in the first few years of my retirement because I'm new to it. I do not feel deprived in any way and am enjoying life. No pension, social security and my nest egg.
I could have continued to work at a very easy and well paying job but I decided that life is more important than the extra money.
