Mark, I'm no expert in sentiment but I have to think we should get more margin selling in the coming weeks especially now that the margin debt reached new record high of $285 bn.
The problem is, you don't know what they were DOING with that margin debt. Were they shorting? Were they buying the QID and the MZZ vs. their longs, on margin? Were they doing arbitrage? Were they doing options strategies?
How much is relevant to the market's action?
Personally, I don't think margin debt tells us much of value any more. The investment world is far more chaotic and, well, VIBRANT than it used to be. Mom's and pops can run their own hedge funds these days, and add in some pretty sophisticated strategies, too.
