Hydrogen To Go

Runs on about a quart of water. I heard from a friend that Arnold Schwarzenegger is putting one of these on one of his HUM-Vs.

SemiBizz, what do you think of semis? They are not acting too well lately. SOX is back inside the 7-month range, but smh is not. That's weird.

There have been attempts to retrofit vehicles to run on hydrogen....but they have led to engine breakdown after about 50,000 miles.

http://www.freerepub...s/1142602/posts

However, there are plenty of existing machines...fork lifts, etc.....that are on long running lives because they were originally designed to withstand the heat and pressure that hydrogen generates. So the technology is available.

In the Corvette retrofit example listed above, the hydrogen was actually produced with home-based solar collectors to form safe metal hydride fuel. Do you think Big Oil or Big Auto is anxious to let this technology out of the bag or do anything to assist it?

Hydrogen power still requires an energy source to split the water into the oxygen and hydrogen. So this is really more like a new type of battery than a new primary source. Possible ways to provide the electricity include a generator, such as those currently in use on hybrid cars, as well as plugging into the power grid, which of course requires more generation capacity, which would have to be nuclear, solar, or other non-fossil fuel based source in order to not defeat the purpose of the new technology. But overall, it's a great idea. The big question is if the cost, safety, weight, and efficiency of the hydrogen system compare favorably with other ways to store energy on a vehicle.

Good post in a good thread. I say build a bunch of nuke plants for power to split up the hydrogen and oxygen. If one burns a kilogram of oil or coal, one can generate 3 or 4 kilowatt hours of electricity. 1 kilogram of uranium will give almost 50,000 KWH.

Very interesting stuff -- I think we're living in "interesting times" if nothing else, where we'll see changes fairly fast in energy usages.
