My first trip to Cozumel Mexico was this past December.
What I thought were unusual construction methods were actually left over concrete and rebar rubble from hurricaine Wilma which hit in October 2005.
The people there have worked so hard for the past 22 month's to rebuild the island paradise.
Tonight, it looks like nature will once again humble man and his puny efforts to dominate that which cannot be tamed.

Sad. I walked those streets a few months after that storm. It was my sixth trip to the area of Cancun/Cozumel/Playacar. This one was on a cruise as opposed to the others. Incredibly, the force of the storm nearly shredded the massive concrete docks for the cruise ships. Vegetation was gone along the coast and you could see resorts that were in shambles. Having been through a direct tornado hit at my house in 1998 I know how long it takes the vegetation to grow back and look normal....and now before they even get that far they get to go through it again. I enjoyed every single trip there and, even though I wish they would stop coming here illegally, I have a deep respect for their work ethic and hospitality. Playacar has been transformed into a really nice area and its gonna get slammed for the second time in two years. Awful.

Rog,
Dean is now a full cat 5 but hurricaine force winds are expected to go well south of Cozumel
http://weather.sun-s...00704_wind.html
and the eye is expected to hit near Chetumal, Mexico. http://www.wundergro...sters/show.html
Cozumel will still experience TSF winds less than 75mph but nothing like Wilma flying right over Cozumel
Echo
ps That is Cozumel in the eye of Wilma!

I hope so for their sake.
It can be so demoralizing to work so hard for so long and then see it all for naught.

Taiwan got hit with three typhoons in a month!
After each typhoon passed over Taiwan they were all headed our way to Xiamen. But each time the typhoons turned & missed us.
The locals say the large stone statue of Zheng Chenggong watches over & protects the city.
Myself, I have been in quite a few typhoons over here. The one in Hong Kong a few weeks ago was totally wimpy! No catagory 4s or 5 mind you, but the catagory 3s ain't nothing compared to a good ole southeast Michigan thunderstorm! The only difference is the duration.
Only in geometry can a line go into infinity.

Yes, I feel sorry for locals who struggle with small business ... which has already been hard it by the passing of the boomer spending sprees (1980's).
Life can be difficult. I often wonder why I'm so fortunate (accident of genetics and birth location).
Gratitude folks ... no matter how little you think you have.
