For a 13 yr old.....Don't buy the top of the line.....Buy Dell, HP/Compaq or Sony.....Look for deals....

I have been a computer geek my whole life. Tested a prototype for IBM in the 6th grade (1965). THey were big in my home town. Took FORTRAN programming in college, learned APL, COBOL,etc. Bought an IBM XT (still have it) for a gazillion dollars with a green screen. Was a DOS/Windows man all the way... until VISTA, which put me over. It stinks stinks stinks.... Got a sweet little 13 inch MAC book, for home use... word, Browsing, SKYPE, email, instant chatting with the kids and family around the world. Open the top, its on, and works. Barttery lasts forever. No Freeze ups, nada, zip... Do yourself a favor and get a Macbook. Or an HP with XP on it, NOT vista... mm

Consumer Reports just did an article on Lap Tops. I was interested because i was thinking of replacing my desk top computer with a lap top this time around. After seeing how much more I have to pay for a lap top with similar power, size, etc to a desktop....I'll just go with another cheap but powerful box for the computer room and forget about the laptop.

Apparently laptops are getting cheaper though....

Nicholas Negroponte’s project to outfit every third world child with his or her very own laptop for US $100 moves one step closer to reality with the first 10 laptops shipped at a cost of US $150 each.

One thing. For a kid, speed and versatility will likely be important. If he's running Vista, get 2 gigs of ram. That'll help a lot. Mark

i dont think its a very savory idea to promote a brand etc, but we have gotten very good deals at tigerdirect dot com, and i think I should mention it. they also have a clearance and overstock section. you can also use a service like bizrate dot com to compare prices, reviews and vendors when you have some models you like. klh

Yep them kids need more ram than for gaming but I would have them play games on a gaming machine and "save" the laptop for less intense use such as the brilliant research they will do... Or more likely to endlessly pm and text: "IDK my BFF JILL" and to get around your porn blocker. <_<
