It could be the dividend -or- just the market price depending on demand-supply. SPX is computed based on exact value of each stock price in the index. SPY trades like a stock and could be at premium or discount based on demand/supply for the stock SPY at the moment.

SPY ex-div 3/16/07, record 3/20/07, payable 4/30/07 It looks like MDY also went ex-div but I don't have the data. Anyone using fib retracements should mind to use the index and not the etf under these conditions...
