8.0 quake hits islands

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (AP) - A powerful undersea earthquake Monday in the South Pacific sent a tsunami several yards high crashing into the Solomon Islands, devastating at least one village, officials and residents said. Police and residents said a wave about 10 feet high struck the western town of Gizo, inundating buildings and causing widespread destruction.

"Some villages are completely wiped out," Fred Fakari told journalists in the capital Honiara.

This Astro guy from your earlier post has nailed this Tsunami to the day! Very impressive.

Torrential winds and rains and powerful seismic action (Richter 5+ earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) make headlines from the first day of the month, and don't let up much until the 5th, what with the full moon setting things up on the 2nd. There's another upsurge of geophysical mayhem around the 8th (the Moon reaching maximum declination south of the celestial equator that day).

considering that there has already been 345 5+ Richter scale earthquakes in 2007 odds are he''ll "nail" one every day.. 5+'s average 1309/per year. that's well over 3 a day. i think i'll become an earthquake swami.

How many earth quakes cause a Tsunami that kills a lot of people? How many make headlines("from the first day of the month") as the author stated would happen now?

Before the Tsunami of late 2004 in south-east asia there was a team of geologist from India that predicted it using astronomical data, a number of planets were lined up which statistically had caused earthquakes of a certain magnitude in a significant number.

Reading the news article link, there was a magnitude 8.0 quake in this instance. Looking at the same data that indicates 1300+ 5+ magnitude quakes a year, how many 8+ magnitude quakes are there per year on average?

One.

The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale of base 10, meaning each number higher means ten times the amplitude.
