I agree that swimming pools are optional, but it's pretty hard to find a house or apartment without a bathtub. If you are a renter, you probably don't have the option of removing it, even if you're willing to spend the money. I've also found it difficult (and dangerous) to give a shower to a toddler, as they tend to slip and fall.
