I think you got it by golly!
Unemployment is still low, people are still working and getting raises.
Yes, they have more money but they have to pay more for goods & services.
If inflation is running at 4%, and consumer spending goes up 3%, that is
hardly a sign of robust activity.

Everywhere I go I see folks loading up on new big screen TV's.
Employment is great, business can't get enough people who want to work.
Everybody is spending $100's a month on their cell phones so they can text message "I DK, my BFF Jill."
$2.65 gas and $80 oil is viewed as a bargain.

They count the rent you pay yourself for living in your own home. That alone will add about 1.6-2.0 points onto personal income and outlays each year.
