With the chances of a rate cut reduced to "0" and earnings heading south, I would expect a sharp sell off.

FWIW, Asteroids do not drop . They are named, orbiting celestial bodies. So really, Asteroid should apply to your second choice.
Drop, perhaps, like a college date the morning after, could be a better metaphor?
Or drop like a hot potato?
Or drop like a bungee jumper on the first leg of the journey?

Yes they do, I've seen 'em do it. Just like a rifle bullet.
Has something to do with momentum, gravity and friction.
