Was that a stupid answer or what ? She's probably one of the "1 in 5" who can't locate the US. :D Yikes! Also, 1 in 5 Americans probably can't tell you directions to anyplace near their home, if its more than a few blocks away. Seriously, true story. A PHD (mechanical engineer) who worked for a company I worked at several years back, could not find his way back home, if you dropped him off somewhere other than right at the office. Yep. The guy only knew how to get from home to the office. If you wanted to go out to meet customers, he would freak. Even if you gave him a map. (So what you say ? we have GPS now ? yeah right!) Math, Science, Economics are all great things to learn. But if you can't figure out the practical basic functions for living, you are in big trouble. And we are surprised by all these American's who took out Subprime mortages now having trouble paying them, now that they are re-setting ? Even if they could read the "fine print" would they know what it means ?

Great Blond Joke !! :( Also, 1 out of 5 American CITIZENS are functionally illiterate! (fortunately most don't vote!!) Ever watch Jay Leno's street "quizzes", such as with College Seniors who could not identify Bush, Cheney, FDR, Einstein, Lincoln -- or -- thought the US got it's independence in 1940 (from Canada). Sheesh!

What's a map? :( Yeah, modern education is great. They used to make kids do like, homework for sure, and You know, Memory work, and it was barbaric. But now we have like..valley talk and these cool teachers who tell us who to vote for and talk about politics and global warming and what we need to do for the world and who has time for that boring stuff like, memory work and math! That was painful.

And many of the people Jay interviews... are school teachers.

The question claimed as fact something that is not true. What does that say about the intelligence? or research? or character? of the people that create those shows. Why are we willing to believe something that on second thought is highly doubtful. Googling suggests it was taken from either "13 percent -- of Americans between the age of 18 and 24, the prime age for military warriors, could find Iraq. The score was the same for Iran, an Iraqi neighbor. " or "only 17 percent of young adults in the United States could find Afghanistan on a map, according to a new worldwide survey released today. "
